Lab Reports, What's the deal?

With everything that i have been reading here about fakes I am surprised that lab reports are not a bigger part of discussion.
I am interested to know what it generally costs to get a substance tested and where to go about getting this done.
(yes, I have done a search)
If anyone has any "general" and "generic" information about this process and what is involved it would be very helpful.

lab test can cost an arm and a leg..

i prefer to test on myself as free lab test and u judge by the sides/gains.
