Surprise prize a shock
Temporary tattoo a KKK figure

By SHANE HOLLADAY, EDMONTON SUN

A city man says he was shocked and disgusted after his nephew found a Ku Klux Klan temporary tattoo in a candy surprise pack distributed by a local company.

Terry Lucas told The Sun he was hosting a birthday party for his son when his nephew came up to him with a temporary tattoo from a packet of Wolfman Tattoo Bubble Gum.

The four-year-old wanted him to apply it to his arm, but Lucas took one look at it and refused.

"I was absolutely shocked. I was like, holy fart! I couldn't believe it," he said. "Can you imagine a lot of other little kids putting it on? They don't know what it means."

Lucas said he called the Alberta Human Rights and Citizneship Commission to complain. They called back yesterday and said they're sending him a complaint form, he said.

The commission also asked him to go across the street to the store where he bought the surprise pack and tell them about the temporary tattoo he found.

Lucas did, and said the shopkeepers at Bella Foodland, at 9849 156 St., were shocked and disgusted. A clerk there told The Sun the product is no longer on the shelves.

Shiraz Somani owns Premier Candy & Snacks Food Inc., at 6803 72 Ave. in Edmonton, which packaged the "Surprise Bag" that held the packet of Wolfman gum.

This is the first he's heard of an offensive temporary tattoo turning up in one of their products, he told The Sun.

"This is the first time we got this product," he said. "I don't know how many people would recognize that image, but they are a group that promotes hate, so we would be concerned."

Somani said he bought the candies from an Ontario company called S&M Enterprises, and was trying to reach the company yesterday to learn the source of the candies.

He said he's now considering tossing the whole lot of candies into the trash.

According to the Wolfman gum wrapper, it's manufactured by Saadet Gida San ve Tic Ltd., a company in Turkey.

The Wolfman brand tattoo gum is sold in shiny packages that look like they contain scary, Halloween-type tattoos, which most of them do.

The Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission would evaluate the tattoo as if it were a pamphlet or poster containing offensive material, said commission director Marie Riddle. The commission investigates if something appears to expose a person or a class of people to hatred or contempt, she said.

"It looks like something that we would be interested in," she said. "You don't have to have the intent to discriminate, it's whether or not you have done something to discriminate that matters."

In 2000, a woman in Saskatoon found temporary tattoos of nude women in her six-year-old daughter's package of Wolfman bubble gum.

Great Sound bites

Note: Recall those Swastika decals for Double Bubble.

They should be forced to include some Rev. Al Sharpton tattoos in the next batch.

Gotta love Canada 'eh? You have to wonder though, would you buy shit from a company entitled "S&M Enterprises" Sounds like a timebomb to me... Ass whips and nut-cuffs yeah, but candy?
