Oh man how this place has changed. For the worse.

I haven't been here in 6 years and this is pathetic. We come down on Wednesday and by Wednesday night, I am ready to leave. This town resembles nothing that it used to. Sad.

It has been over-run with people trying to turn it into another surburan American neighborhood. All these cheap cruises are dumping their equally cheap tourists off at the end of Mallory Square to roam the town. It has gotten so commercial it sucks. Banana Republic, Publix, Walgreens, Dennys, Wendy's, Burger King, and soon to come JCPenny have all invaded. Used to be Duval was a party street where debauchery of all kinds - gay and straight - occured at every red light. You could get a blowjob standing on a street corner and people walking by would not even look at you twice. I know, I did it last time. (and ended up with a black eye from my ex to show for it.) The bars have closed. I mean the really good bars, even the straight ones that were awesome to go in and get smashed up. The alcohol has gone up. Used to be margaritas for 50 cents. Now they are 6 bucks.

And the people living down here... oh lord. teenage gangster wannabees. The white kind. The black teenagers have been getting the hell out of town for the past couple of years. But the white trash... standing around playing hackeysack all day long. Beginning of dreadlocks showing. They ain't got cars, so mopeds are the new rice burners. They give them these $2000 paint jobs which is $1500 MORE than what the little bicycle costs. Then there is some kind of glass marbles that they put in the muffler to make it sound like bees in a tin can. THEN... they sit the muthafuckas up on 22's so fucking wide that with the throttle wide open, they only go 5 miles an hour and that is with them pushing off with their foots too. Poor engine can't move the shit.
These kids have defaced every national landmark, the lighthouse, the Southernmost Point, the Truman house (fence and surrounding area) with their fucked up little tag graffitti. And the thing is, their tags look like shit. Used to be there were nothing but bums and cats down here. Now the bums have been shuttled off to another key farther north or to Miami and these rag tag tweenagers have taken their spots.

About 40% of the houses here are abandoned and boarded up. Not run down places, or ones in need of work, but beautiful houses. Move in tomorrow condition. With fucking plywood over the doors and windows because the owners went bankrupt and had to sell or lost or whatever.

Used to be you could find all gay or all straight nude snorkeling trips. And nude sunset sail cruises in the afternoon. Not anymore. Even the guesthouses are outlawing nudity -men and women- inside the compounds. WTF?

We were suppose to stay until Monday, but came home early today. (Sat)

Never again.

Man that is pretty sad. That's corporate America starting to take hold of all the "freedoms" we have. Bummer.

You can say the same thing in LA. It's tragic. Makes one want to sit down and have a good cry while pleading inwardly .. "Why? Oh Why???...".

House properties in Tonga are looking pretty good. I tell ya -- in 100 years, the amount of Americans who will start expating and living in island nations away from the city ghetto crap is gonna skyrocket. Places where a 110lb coconut carver is still monpolizing a perfectly beautiful and sunny sandy beach! How dare he! That cannot be allowed! Off to the airport... :)

anyone go to hiltonhead? I might be flyin out there this evenin... worth it for 2 days? weather?

used to be bums would practically tackle you and beg for money before they let you up. now they are gone. nothing but these little trashy kids - whose parents have more money than god - standing on the corner with dreadlocks as their way of getting back at their parents for whatever priviledged injustices they may have suffered.

and not one damn decent resturant on the whole fucking island. we are going out to J Alexanders here tonight, which although is a chain resturant, it is 20x better than anything we had down there.

when I return I will tell ya'll how my partner and I along with a table of about 12 black folks got these Hindu/Indi/Indu/BooHoo/Voodoo curry smelling muthafuckas tossed from the steakhouse last night.

sad... used to be on any given night of the week, Key West resembled New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

i thought the Hog's Breath was kind of cool when i was down there....

and the wet T contest at the one place.....these strippers that were on vacation i guess showed up like every night to take their clothes off and shit and do some nasty shit on stage....lol

sounds just like my friends.

a handful of them dropped out of college and went off galavanting around europe and south america on their parents dime. i get emails from them telling me i should come 'experience life' like they are. give me a fucking break. they aren't experiencing life...they arent even spending their own god damn money.

one of them just came back from living abroad (costa rica, france, and honduras), and is super pissed her new 'lover' can't get a visa to come into this country. i tried explaining to her that there is probably a good reason he can't get one (criminal, flagged by the cia, marxist guerilla fighter, etc, etc), but she just blames it all on bush. she is even considering marrying this guy solely so he can get citizenship here.

is everyone my age retarded? i am beginning to think so.

bro these were sulky, good for nothing kids. whose waste of oxygen will hopefully run out before their trust fund does. they would stand around and NOT move at all for people. although every time I walked up and said "move yo ass" they certainly did.

the town is starting to decay under the "improvements" people think they are bringing. it is sad. and the bars no longer have wet tshirt contests or anything like that. you have to go down to the south end and pay a $20 fee just to get "adult entertainment" which is nothing more than girls walking around in Victoria Secret lingerie and promoting themselves as "companions" i.e.... escorts, hookers.

the only decent thing that came out of it is I met a massage therapist that is so fucking eager to get away from down there that he has been driving to Miami and taking supplemental classes on his skills. He really did seem like a guy strong enough to build that new business venture I was thinking about around. he was actually the ONLY LMT on the island. There were 2 other people there advertising themselves as "body rubs" specialist. (read : unskilled, except for hand jobs.) Even the big resorts down there can't get an LMT nowdays.

I used to have a house on Marathon Key...I hear ya..

It used to be weekend partiers and those who lived in the area. It's like a giant tourist shithouse now.

But those homes....that's some sweet investment potential. Those tools making it worse will be squeezed out once people see the loss of property taxes..

Oh well, I guess I can cross Key West off any future trip plans. I have always wanted to go just to hang out for a week because it seemed so cool. Now it sounds like any number of tourist beaches. :(

I love the Florida Keys. It's too bad Key West is being ruined by chain stores and tourist traps. The last time I was there, I remember seeing a Banana Republic and thinking "oh no" for the locals.

I'll just stay in the water. :dolphin:

other cool locals have been able to keep the chain stores out to a certain extent. Last I looked anyway.

Don't recall seeing too many in Vail, Steamboat Springs, Aspen, or Jackson Hole, WY.

The Florida Keys are so very cool though. I just pull up short of Key West. Who wants to stay in any city? Traffic, sirens, etc.

It never fails to amaze me how certain homes could be worth almost DOUBLE in value -- if only the riff-raff that occupy the oxygen and land around it, would just throw themselves into an ocean one night.

Throw all the la mexican and ghetto garbage out -- and you got one HELL of an awesome west coast vacation resort staring at you complete with it's own entertainment, music, and disneyland resort industries.

Wow AAP! I can't believe that...

I remember' back in 1996 when my hubby left me for another woman, I went down to see my parents for Xmas in Ft Lauderdale and while there, went to see my friend who lived in Key West cuz her hubby was in the Coast Guard & was stationed there....

One night we went to Rick's and paid $8 to get in & got a wrist band and a cup -- all the liquor/beer you could drink till 11 pm......THe bartender threw condoms into the crowd.....everyone was bumping & grinding on the dance floor.....I ended up on some guys boat doing it with him and had to walk home to the Coast Guard base and got lost at 4 am.....

Oh those were the days.....it's a shame it's changed.....

Man, those care free days of Key West are long over. I once spent 2 months in Key West when I was single, and had the time of my life. I couldn't spend two days in it now.

The resturants which had normally been individual specialties are now lack luster. Nothing but a name going on with totally new chefs and shit. If you can honestly believe me when I say this... I had the best steak on the island while eating at Dennys.

And... get this, guest houses are no longer allowed to have out door speakers and play music. You can no longer purchase a drink at an outdoor club and walk around with it. Alcoholic or not.

SNUBA (the hybrid of snorkeling and scuba) is no longer allowed.

Fort Zachary Taylor no longers allows beach goers to snorkel in waist deep water there. (you have to pay to be taken out somewhere)

This phenomenon has taken over the country bro.

They will soon charge us to look at the mountains I think.

Entrepreneurs are working on it and politicians are ready to work for them. :)

Another thing.. .for some reason, Segways (mobile transporters) are banned. Along with foot propelled scooters (like kids ride). I don't know why. they rent mopeds and those little electric cars and bicycles but the two above are banned. Makes no sense. Where is the logic behind it?

Also gas = 2.60

retirement / golfing / boating for the well off but not rich 50+ crowd.

PM me if you end up in the area.

AAP - I am sad to hear this as we have not had a chance to head down there yet in life.. Where are you in FL? Any places you can suggest to visit?

heh......i remember the bums

We were playing golf in Key west and came to a hole that ran parallel with the road.

There were about five bums selling balls they had found for 5 bucks a bag.
We bought them all!

Ft Lauderdale is gayer than Key West is now. It has twice as many gay resorts and guest houses. Better beaches, better nightlife (Key West only has 3 gay bars and their combined crowd might equal 20).

Where to go depends on what you are interested in.
