Ketostix, Splenda....

DanielBishop

New member
I first bought some ketostix back in about.... probably June or July. I don't use them very often, but that's only because I haven't been in a PROPER ketogenic diet until about a month ago.

Anyway.... the point is, I don't seem to ever get a ketone reading. I've read people saying they're not very accurate, but I thought it strange that I got a reading months ago when I was eating MUCH more protein and even many more carbs than I am now.... now I get no reading. So what gives? I'm a fair bit leaner than I was back then.... does your bodyfat levels make a difference? My friend who was also following the diet back when I first bought the ketostix got an extremely dark colour on the stick when we first tried it, whereas mine was significantly lighter (but at least it was something)..... and he's really fat. So it made me think that perhaps the less bodyfat you have, the less ketones are present in your urine? Someone please explain....

For the record, here is my diet. I've posted it a bunch of times before, so my apologies to those who are sick of seeing it. I follow Mr. X's CKD ratios with this:

Meal 1, 6:30am: Scrambled eggs, cooked in canola margarine (70% fat, no protein or carbs) to meet the fat requirement
Meal 2, 9:30am: Musashi 92% Protein powder (2.1% carbs, 1.5% fat, 92% protein) canola oil, psyllium husks, mixed with water
Meal 3, 12:30pm: Same as meal 2
Meal 4, 3:30pm: Same as meal 3
Meal 5, 6:30pm: Same as meal 1

So that's it. Same thing every day.... by my calculations, my carb breakdown is as follows:
Daily carb intake from the protein powder (on the days when I take the MOST powder): 2.025g
Daily carb intake from eggs (on the days when I eat the MOST eggs): 6g

That keeps me well under the allowable 20g mark. And I don't eat anything else. So why the nothing reading on the ketostix?

As for cardio etc, I don't do THAT much. Usually running or walking in the morning on an empty stomach. If it's running, it's usually 35 minutes or so jogging (70+% MHR) or HIIT (80+% MHR) or brisk walking for about 60 minutes (usually 60% MHR or possibly less).... I do that probably 4 times a week at least. I also lift weights 3 times a week in the afternoons with high intensity, 2 exercises per bodypart, 2 bodyparts per workout, 4 sets per exercise, 6-12 reps per set, 60 seconds rest between sets.

My job is also quite physical.... lifting and moving boxes etc (not heavy, usually no more than 20kg) I try to drink as much water as possible during the day.

From everything that I've been reading, this I should be in ketosis for sure. I don't really know if I'm losing any fat at the moment, since I always cave and binge on Sundays and eat all kinds of crap on my refeed days (chocolate, ice-cream etc) which probably gains back any fat that I lost in the week prior and more.

However.... what do you make of the ketostix reading in light of this?

Also.... I would like to use a touch of Splenda here and there. Mr X said that artificial sweeteners can keep some people out of ketosis, but I think he was talking about aspartame etc.... does the same happen with sucralose? If so, how much do you think would kick me out of ketosis?

Thanks.

the first thing I want to point out is that the strips are still valid if the exp date is good[

yes, BF levels can play a role in Ketone production, but not a big enough role to cause problems

My friend who was also following the diet back when I first bought the ketostix got an extremely dark colour on the stick when we first tried it, whereas mine was significantly lighter (but at least it was something)..... and he's really fat. yes, you have the correct idea, w/ less bf more dietary fat is converted to ketones and used up for energy as much as possible so not much Ketonuria happens

For the record, here is my diet. I've posted it a bunch of times before, so my apologies to those who are sick of seeing it. I follow Mr. X's CKD ratios with this:

Meal 1, 6:30am: Scrambled eggs, cooked in canola margarine (70% fat, no protein or carbs) to meet the fat requirement
there is protein and carbs here...eggs have protein and carbs

Meal 2, 9:30am: Musashi 92% Protein powder (2.1% carbs, 1.5% fat, 92% protein) canola oil, psyllium husks, mixed with water
WHAT? 92% protein..that's WAY TOO MUCH
Meal 3, 12:30pm: Same as meal 2
Meal 4, 3:30pm: Same as meal 3
again, WAY TOO MUCH PROTEIN
Meal 5, 6:30pm: Same as meal 1

So that's it. Same thing every day.... by my calculations, my carb breakdown is as follows:
Daily carb intake from the protein powder (on the days when I take the MOST powder): 2.025g
Daily carb intake from eggs (on the days when I eat the MOST eggs): 6g

That keeps me well under the allowable 20g mark. And I don't eat anything else. So why the nothing reading on the ketostix?
you might be keeping your carbs low, but your protein intake is outrageous

My job is also quite physical.... lifting and moving boxes etc (not heavy, usually no more than 20kg) I try to drink as much water as possible during the day.
the water intake might dilute urine ketone levels

From everything that I've been reading, this I should be in ketosis for sure. I don't really know if I'm losing any fat at the moment, since I always cave and binge on Sundays and eat all kinds of crap on my refeed days (chocolate, ice-cream etc) which probably gains back any fat that I lost in the week prior and more.
try controlling the carb-up, you'll see a difference

However.... what do you make of the ketostix reading in light of this?
seems like you're taking in too much protein...
Many times you'll not achive Ketonuria but your body will be in a state of Ketonemia....that's urine levels of ketones vs. blood levels of ketones...
In your case, it's seems that the protein (which converts up to 56% to glucose) is causing you do be out of Ketosis

Also.... I would like to use a touch of Splenda here and there. Mr X said that artificial sweeteners can keep some people out of ketosis, but I think he was talking about aspartame etc.... does the same happen with sucralose? If so, how much do you think would kick me out of ketosis?
sucralose might kick you out, so can splenda...it all varies for people

Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well.

I follow your protein:fat recommendations exactly as you have them in the CKD manual. You misunderstood some of the stuff I was saying.

The protein powder I take, has 92g of protein per 100g. Hence being 92% protein. However, I only take small amounts at a time.... depending on which day of the CKD cycle I'm on, no more than 35g of protein powder per meal. I was just breaking down the protein powder for you, so you knew how much of what was in it.

My ACTUAL diet looks like this:

Day 1-
Meal 1: 120g eggs, 37g canola margarine
Meal 2, 3 and 4: 16g protein powder, 41g canola oil (and psyllium husks)
Meal 5: 120g eggs, 37g canola margarine

Day 2-
Meal 1: 200g eggs, 17g canola margarine
Meal 2, 3 and 4: 26g protein powder, 34g canola oil (and psyllium husks)
Meal 5: 200g eggs, 17g canola margarine

Etc etc....

See what I mean? I was just breaking down each of the foods I eat. My protein isn't that high. I follow your manual exactly.

And I WAS counting the protein/carb content of the eggs.... the 70% fat figure was only referring to the margarine I cook them with.

So.... now what do you think? Knowing this, is there still any reason I would be staying out of ketosis? Or are the stix just unreliable?

By the way, I haven't used Splenda for a while (except once today) so if I'm being kept out of ketosis, it wouldn't be that.

Do this for me...

Drop your protein intake to 50g for one day....and do morning cardio. Tell me that day if you hit ketosis or the next day.

Mr.X

Righto, I'll try that on Monday. Although.... that's the day after my refeed. Will that work? Or should I do it later in the week?

Do it on the second day after your refeed, the first day follow your usual ratios and test for ketones.

Mr.X

Alright, I'll do that.

I think it's probably the ketostix, though. I certainly FEEL like I'm in ketosis most of the time.... exhaustion, weak muscles etc.... dunno if those are normal symptoms, but I'm getting as much fat as you recommend.

And the stix are really quite old. Like I said, June or July.... maybe they're expired.

Any way to check? They're actually Keto-Diastix.... so I think you can use them to test for diabetes as well. Any way to run a test on them, see if they're still working?

I have a solution...BUY a new bottle of Ketostix and see if it changes things. Test w/ the old and test w/ the new and you'll see.

Mr.X

Sorry, but I'm REALLY stingy. Can't afford another bottle of stix.

I think I'll mix up a sugar solution to see if the diabetes part of the stick works.

No, mixing sugar will not do it...
you mean to tell me you can't afford 10$? Ok, I understand, well maybe ketosis is not for you. It's hard to do it properly w/o the proper tools.
