figures a Canadian would answer correctly as she was one of the US Great Lakes Training Aircraft carriers.

Actually, the best hint was from the 4 coal stacks. There were only two variants in the WWII era under service that had them. Your "ferry" hint made it easy, being that it's an early 1900s great lakes, ferry ship converted for use as an aircraft training carrier.
