Okay.

Someone save me 12 hours of surfing the web and trial & error -- and just tell me where to go to get:

Free
Easy

1) DVD Burner software for normal DVD's (backup of my data)
2) DVD Burner software for backing up 8.4GB Microsoft DVDs
3) DVD Burner software for backing up Copy-Protected Movie DVDs

Those are my 3 uses. The web has like 9 gazillion software programs, 9 gazillion methods of doing everything, and 9 gazillion mnemonics.

I did numbnut. I found no thread with the answers that I seek. Unless you know of such a thread.
LOL, numbnut. you must be at least 36 to call me that. :lmao:

anyways, Razor Ramon has a heads up on most of this DVD stuff... he helped me out.

DVD Shrink - Free. Works great for movies and gets around encryption. This only rips the movies onto your hard drive though.

Nero - Good burning program. Not free (but can be found in hacked forms). If you have DVD Shrink and Nero installed, you can rip a movie and it will go straight to burning it, saving you the hell of making sure all the files are there where they are supposed to be.

Straight data backup should be a piece of cake. Drop and drag. That is, if we're talking about files and what not. Zip them or download winrar, drag, drop, burn, nothing special needed.

Backing up dual layer Microsoft DVDs? Dunno how well that'll work considering there's some form of encryption and I have never messed with it. A straight burning program, such as Nero, can be used to copy DVDs.

I was busy typing it all out :embarrassed:

Me and Netflix are like best friends :D I think I ran into one DVD that I couldn't rip with DVD Shrink, but it turned out the DVD was extremely dirty and I eventually got it to work.

I'm glad you have all those backup copies! wouldn't want you to not be able to enjoy a movie one night ;)

I should get one of those, save some $$.

I think newegg dropped their price on NEC drives down to the low $50 range. The NEC drives are supposed to be one of the best on the market at the moment, especially considering the price. I got one of their most recent models, dual layer and can burn DVDs at 16x. I think there's a flash upgrade availible for the drive, but I'm not messing with dual layer stuff so I have no need for it. Dual layer DVDs are too expensive for me. I just reauthor all my movies to drop the menus, foriegn languages, and extras. It gets me above 70% compression which supposedly is still high quality. I don't notice because we still have a conventional TV and I have no plans to upgrade the TV anytime soon. If I did, my kids would ruin it within a month. Our living room is small too. If I put a 42" widescreen in there we'd have to sit in the next room.

I just download them. You can pretty much get the new releases before they hit the stores.

Let us know how your DVD copying went. If you have a PS2 or Xbox you can mod those and play copied games too but one 1st thing 1st grasshopper. Get the movies right and go from there. Like it has been said DVD Shrink is a point and click free program that will handle at leat 95% of your copies.

the part in Family Guy lastnight where Peter was talking dirty to his wife in bed was one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen.

get Maximum PC magazine; they explain how to copy every disk you've got.

Family Guy was hillarious! I love how they made fun of British Porn! hahahaha.

And yeah, i read through cdfreaks.com msg boards pretty thoroughly and that NEc 3270A (?) model i just bought -- was held as the holy grail by the experts in terms of being the best overall DVD Burner.

$50 at newegg.com (OEM).

I have the 3520A. It's been good to me so far.

I think I paid $60-ish, but that was a few months ago and I know the NEC drives have gotten a bit cheaper since then.
