...like a half pill of valium once a week before my speech com class. you guys think this could lead to anything bad? im scared shitless of this class so i need it

Giving speeches before groups can be terrifying. A very low dose of prescribed valium would help. Try it first to make sure it doesn't put you to sleep or slow your wits.

Should you find yourself giving more and presentations, which is what real life becomes, you'll need to conquer this fear.

I took Dale Carnegie training and learned to enjoy the experience. I found that by:
(1) Being completely prepared
(2) Having props, including a talk sheet, so I wouldn't get lost
(3) Standing in the room at the podium beforehand
(4) And liking the audience
I didn't get the shakes.

God ideas - I've naturally fallen into these four points on my own through a few years of giving presentations.
Remember in most cases the audience already holds you in high regard as a subject matter expert when giving a presentation in "the real world".

If you are looking to the chemical route, talk to your doctor about a low dose of a beta-blocker. I used to take these to reduce the frequency of skipped heart beats (Premature Ventricular and Atrial Contractions). I took a very low dose as needed and it was so low that my pharmancy had to special order them for me, then I had ot split them in quarters. They work by blocking the noradrenaline receptors in your heart. So they basically break the adrenaline response - your heart does not respond to the adrenaline produced by anxiety, and by not responding you avoid that cycle where adrenaline --> elevated heart rate --> more adrenaline --> more elevated heart rate etc etc.

They are used by public performers like musicians and speakers, athletes requiring supreme calm like sharp-shooters, are not addictive, and are a very safe medication. Just make sure you get it from your doctor so he can evaluate you. Most doctors will not have a problem prescribing it.

Being a speaker myslef, I can tell you that it can be a scary task sometimes. I would not suggest you take anything at all. I would suggest you practice your speach in front of a mirror several times before standing in front of a bunch of people. Also, time yourself. This is important as you dont want to rush or take too long.

Crack a joke every once in a while, it helps everyone relax and keeps up their attention. Dont talk with your hands in your pockets (EVER!!), involve your audience if at all possible.

thatsweird that this subject came up...im taking speech this semester and i aready had to give my first speech...holy shit was i scared...you think like a xanax would be better than a valium for public speeking? never really thought about taking meds before speaking...let me know bro...im scared shitless of speaking in public
