Joining the Army National Guard... yay or nay

What do you guys think about the ANRG??

I've been thinking about for a while and talked to the recruiter yesterday.

Seems like a pretty good deal..
insurance
extra money each month
school's completly payed for
enlistment bouns 6 grand
extra skill(although I'm not sure when driving a tank would come in handy)
Alot of the stuff they do is what I'd consider fun.

Plus, where I'd meet once a month is like 3 miles from my house.

Anyone know anybody that was/is in the guard???

I VOTE....

NAY!!! We are at war right now and the only reason if u even think about goin in is if you are willing to sacrifice your life if u ever have to go to war. If it's for the $$$ then don't do it. I've had 6 peeps alone this semester who had to just pick up and leave and 5 of those 6 are reserve marines and 1 in the special opts Air Force... :p

yeah, but I'm not currently in school right now and I wouldn't really care if I had to ship out.

I always wanted to join the military but never did cause the lack of decent pay.

Sounds cheezy, but I'd be proud to serve my country and help protect people.

Considering the amount of time you wil spend vs the benefits it's a very good deal. The safest place to be MOS wise in the ARNG is in combat arms. They grab the service support people right away and even if your unit is activated you'll most likely end up in the states taking the place of active duty units leaving.

Trust me on the MOS thing, my brother in law is the 1st sgt in a firefighting unit and he's been activated for Desert Storm, Bosnia, and Iraqi Freedom. One of my friends is the XO for an ANG MP company and he is on active duty in Turkey. I don't know of one combat arms unit that has been activated from my state.

Well I was in the National Guard and my school wasn't completely paid for by them so I would like to know exactly how they are gonna do that. I got a tution waiver which is only available in about 10 states. And you have to go to a state schoo for that. There's the GI Bill (about $220 a month, what I got 8 years ago might be more now) and your pay for drills, like another $150 a month. That didn't totally cover room and board, books and fees.

If you are pro military do it or go active. If it's purely for college reasons think long and hard about it. And despite what they say they want to get cute and not ante up with it comes time to repay your student loans although they say they will no problem.

If you are not willing to do this, you should not enlist in peace time either.

I'm fully ready to to take it all the way if nessary, I'm not going to half ass it.

The Whole F/N Show, I got the impression that any school would be paid for(any amount will help though).

JavaGuru, it would be combat arms most likely and the good thing is that the armory is about 10 min from my house.

I've always wanted to join the military so I really think it would be mostly beneficial with minimal draw backs.

I wouldn't care if I got shipped out either. I'd like to travel.
