John Walker facing LIFE - does he deserve it?

I say no. Not sure he did anything horribly wrong.

He didn't fight against the US in a declared war. Is there any evidence he fought against the US at all?

He didn't have anything to do with the prison uprising where the CIA agent was killed: he was hiding in a basement.

He has provided highly valuable intelligence, which generally reduces a criminal sentence.

He has effectively renounced his US citizenship. As such, he is not a traitor. He should be treated like the other prisoners of war will be...in accordance with the Geneva Convention, and ultimately, probably released.

Your thoughts?

the day has finally arrived..........I COMPLETELY agree with you, couldn't agree with your reasoning more.

if our tax dollars helped this guy in any way in his life, i say kill the fucker. Im sure at some time the government has helped this piece of shit to get something. Just my thoughts, i see him as a traitor and i think he should be executed

Hee hee. Amazing huh?

I understand the argument for imprisonment, I just disagree with it.

From a legal sense, he has really only done one thing illegal. Joined the armed defense of another, nonallied nation. Which last I heard gets your citizenship revoked and deported to that nation.

It would be best handled by revoking his citizenship and extraditing him to the new Afghanistani government for war crimes.

But my gut reaction is to try him for treason and if found guilty, to put him to death. Putting him in jail in Levinworth would essentially be a death sentence, a prison full of ex-military and federal criminals....he'd last three weeks.

Code,

Your first suggestion seems reasonable, although I doubt low level Taliban will face war crimes charges in Afghanistan....

Leavenworth is filled with people who hate the government: federal prisoners. He might be all right.

Heh, good point. There are a lot of govt haters in there.

Offering him to the new Afghani government might not get him charged with anything serious. But it would wipe our hands of it, and keep the controversy of a trial.

He'll never get a fair trial in the US. And a trial using the UCMJ would be harsh and unfair.

If he is found guilty of aiding terrorist, or a terrorist group---then he should receive the death penalty.---if we let him go, we are letting a terrorist go(if he is convicted of aiding terrorist).

I am not a terrorist sympathiser.

The way I see it----if we are going to be over there trying to catch the bad guys, we need to throw the book at 'em when we catch 'em.

According to Time mag, the Afghan warlords are looking the other way as higher-ranking Taliban go free. Just as long as they get paid.

He'll love it. Prison is what he's been looking for... being told what how and when to do everything.

We caught hundreds of them. Should we try them all?

No, I dont think so--its war.

But they are already trying this guy----right. He is kind of a horse of a different color b/c he is one of our own.

He didn't commit treason.

We did not, nor do we have a decleration of war passed by congress against the taliban. All we are doing in Afghanistan is aiding the Northern Alliance.

He may have known of a planned suicide terrorist attack but I imagine so did the FBI and CIA know that there were plans for somekind of suicide terrorist attack. People act as if he knew every detail, which given his status I doubt that he knew anything beyond "Hey, were going to set off a bomb in America sometime."

That makes him a conspirator?

Then were all conspiring with Osama since we've heard he has plans for future attacks and were just sitting on our hand waiting for the numbness to make jacking off seem like it's someone else doing it!

I don't really know enough of the facts regarding what he did or might have known etc. to make a resonable call on how he should be dealt with. If it is proven that he actively aided "terrorists" in acts against the US he should do serious time or be strung up by his nuts.
