John Crane died this morning

My dad passed away this morning at about 5:30 Costa Rica time. The causes of death were listed as septic shock, renal failure, and internal bleeding.

Here's the short version of what happened: He entered the hospital in January to reverse a colostomy which was performed in September. The surgery apparently went well but about two days before he was set to leave the hospital his intenstines, possibly at the site of the surgery, ruptured. This led to a chain of events that resulted in his death about two and a half weeks later. He was unconscious and on a respirator for those two weeks and, according to his doctors, was never in any pain. At times it seemed he responded to our touch and speech but we can't be sure what his level of consciousness was.

And now here's an even shorter version of how my father died: My father drank himself to death. One doctor told me at one point that my father was "sin duda (without a doubt)" in the hospital for one reason and one reason only: alcohol.

I know bodybuilders, especially the ones that are really serious, don't drink much. I love having abs yet I do put back the occasional brew. But this whole ordeal (having to come down to C.R. after not having much contact with my dad for 10 years, mising school, not knowing how long I'd be here, etc.) has made me think and I just wanted to pass this on: Alcohol kills relationships, families, brain cells, and people. Not to mention it's terrible for your physique. Think about that the next time you find yourself drinking for no good reason or by yourself. Then think about your family. Where do you want to be when you're 23, 43, 63, or 93? What do you want your family to think of you? Just a few more reasons not to drink.

Thanks and I just want to say I love elite fitness, in the last two weeks here in Costa Rica I have visited the boards every time I went to an internet cafe and it was a great escape from the tragedy that was happening in my life. I even found out about some drugs that are available down here (nothing that good) and that my dad was taking by asking on the boards. I've joined a gym down here and I haven't missed too many workouts but believe me I will be upping the intensity once I put this all behind me (now we have to go through his stuff and donate or sell most of it).

Thanks for the support,

Jonathan

I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my father a little over 5 years ago, and while it doesn't get any easier, it does hurt a little less with time.

Good luck to you and your family.

im sorry to hear that...my best wishes go to you

Sorry for your loss.

I would be more inclined to think that there was weakening of the intestines from repeated surgery, which led to this tragedy.

The doctor blamed alcohol because that sounds a lot better than "malpractice".

Alcohol is the true wonder of the Nature.

I am truly sorry for your loss, and I wish you and your family heartfelt wishes in this time of sorrow my friend...

Peace

jon, I'm sorry for you and your family's loss. I hope you will be able to come to peace with this soon enough, you sound like you are doing great with that already.

Thanks for sharing your message about alcohol. :)

malpractice

What's up folks. Just wanted to say thanks for those who offered their condolences, the people on this board are a great bunch.

But to the couple of you who put forth the idea of malpractice, don't try to tell ME how my father died. You weren't there. I understand that Costa Rica is a third world country and it's easy to assume that the medical care here is subpar, but that's just not true.

The medical care in Costa Rica has such a good reputation that many people actually fly down here for elective surgery because it's much cheaper here, though of course the doctors are just as skilled as in any first world nation. It's also popular among retirees because they know if they develop any problems they are giving up nothing in the medical care department.

Yes the idea that the surgery was botched has occurred to me. But thinking that my dad died because of a stupid mistake does not make me feel any better. Second, I wouldn't have any idea how to go about "rectifying" such a mistake anyway.

I also understand some of you like to enjoy alcoholic beverages and don't like to see the negative side of it. That's fine. But there is a very, very dark side to alcohol.

I would like to also state that I met a lot of the families of foreigners that were in the ICU with my dad. There was at least one nurse who worked at a major hospital in New Jersey. They were to a person impressed with the medical care their relatives were getting. My dad was in the best hospital in Costa Rica and I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that he got the best and most aggresive care available on Earth. If I or any loved one ever got into an accident in San Jose I would insist on myself or that person being taken to La Clinica Biblica. In fact in the obituary we are asking that people who want to remember my father with a donation donate to the clinic.

Finally, the reason my dad had to get the colostomy in the first place is that he layed in bed for several months drinking scotch and not eating. He woke one day up bleeding out of his asshole. A friend took him to the hospital and he was so sick (days if not hours away from starvation) that the doctors had to get his strength up for several weeks before they could even operate.

So my dad drank himself to death. Even in the extremely unlikely event that the doctors botched the operation he wouldn't have have needed it in the first place if he wasn't an alcoholic.

There. Sorry if that was a bit graphic or abrasive but I had to get it out there.

Again, thanks for the support and long live bodybuilding!

health insurance

Oh yeah to those who think lack of health insurance might have been a factor my dad's hospital bill was $75,000 and the health insurance paid all but $200 of that.

Sorry for your loss. I am hoping you did not see him suffer too much.

Like you said, the health system there is not all that bad and alcoholism weakens the entire body; immune system, healing, etc...

One way or another alcoholism kills.

Rupture and sepsis are common complications following any kind of intestinal surgery.

My sympathys go out to you... I wish you the best... and am sorry.
