Jerry Rice....the best ever.

I agree. The best football player ever.

He made Montana, Young, and now Gannon into MVP's. Those guys had skills but how did they do in their careers without JR? Montana was shit on the Chiefs, Young was clueless (though inexperienced) with teh Bucs, and Gannon was OK without Rice, not a star.

Jerry even picked up his own league MVP award, rare for receivers.

And he wins with class.

Best Receiver Ever - Jerry Rice
Best Running Back Ever - Barry Sanders (Payton a close #2)
Best Linebacker Ever - Dick Butkus
Best QB Ever - Dan Marino or Steve Young

well his career qb rating is a start.

Anyone trying to make an argument that Rice isn't one of the top 2-3 football players and by far the best reciever of all time is downright silly. A good argument would be trying to decide who the 2nd best reciver of all time is, there are a few guys you could make a case for...

Rice is the best football player of all time, but as far as the second best reciever ever, there are a bunch of guys you could debate, largent, art monk, irvin. But my choice would be the guy playing opposite of rice= Tim Brown.

Tim Brown, Michael Irvin, Cris Carter, I didn't see enough of the older guys like Largent and Lance Alworth, but the guy I liked in big games was Michael Irvin. Whenever the Cowboys needed a big play in all those championship games they went to Irvin, and he made the plays. He was a master of pushing off and being physical with smaller cornerbacks. The thing that woul dhur thim is he didn't have the numbers of Brown or Carter. Sterling Sharpe would have some sick numbers by now if he hadn't hurt his neck...

Harrison will end up with some great numbers, as will Owens and Moss. It will be interesting to see how their caeers end up. Harrison has great speed, quickness and is a precise route runner. He has remarkable toughness for a guy who isn't that big. Moss has incredible physical tools, but his lack of strength sometimes allows him to jammed by the stronger corners. Owens right now represents the biggest mismatch, as no corner is big and strong enough to handle him. Sometimes I question his motivation though, when I see him doing endzone dance when his team is trailing by 3 touchdowns. Another thing to consider when talking about Tim Brown is that he was also a standout kick returner during the first 6-7 years of his career as well...

Young was awesome and had some great stats, but he only played in 1 Super Bowl, he was the backup to Montana in 2 others...

Oh yeah, best linebacker ever= LT
I know he sometimes lined up at end but for the most part he was lined up at linebacker.
Best quarterback is really open for discussion, Marino has the best numbers, Bradshaw and Aikman won superbowls, Unitas is the first great superstar of the league, but give me elway.

About time someone noticed. Elway had the best combo of leadership, strenght, durability, and mobility. We always felt like were still in the game with Elway. 3rd and 20? No problem. Down by 14 in the 4th quarter? A great opportunity.

He played for a coach who did nothing for him for years, a mediocre (at best) line protected him, and his running backs and recievers were not special.

All that changed with Shanahan. Result? Two back to back rings.

If he threw to Jerry Rice and played for Bill Walsh and the 49ers, he would have 5-6 rings.

Elway was THE man.

He bumped into once and my entourage had to talk to him.

Elway had a cannon for an arm/great mobility/ and the perfect cocky attitude you want in a quarterback. Test boy your right, put elway with the 80's 49ers or even the 90's cowboys, and he would have owned every record and half a dozen rings.
Now who wants to start up a debate over the best team in nfl history?

He sat on the bench for two of those for petes sake.

That wasnt his fault, it was the coaches.

Steve Young may not be the absolute greatest, maybe #2 or possibly #3, but had he not been held back for most of his career and spent several years in the USFL, his stats (which are already impressive) would possibly be Top 3 or Top 5 EVER.

Steve Young's final NFL stats:
33124 Passing Yards
4239 Rushing Yards (pretty impressive for a QB)
96.8 Rating (one of the best ever)
232 Passing TDs (to only 107 INT's)

Led the NFL in QB Rating 6 times
Led the NFL in Completion % 5 Times
Led the NFL in Yards Per Pass 5 Times
Led the NFL in Passing TD's 4 Times
3 Super Bowl Rings

And remember, his stats would have been better if he hadnt been a backup to Montana until 90-91.

I like young as a quarterback, i just think that he ranks behind elway, marino, montana, and now possibly favre. My knowledge of the older guys (staubach, bradshaw, unitas) is limited, but of the more recent i would place young behind these guys despite the fact that young had a great superbowl performance and great qb rating.
