I've noticed Asian people have the weirdest ideas about exercising.

I work in a large technology and use the corporate fitness center to work out. It's relatively small and not a lot of people use it so you can generally see what everyone is doing and who's new.

Yesterday, I see an asian man mid 40s walking on the treadmill in bluejeans carrying 5 pound dumbbells. He wasn't moving his arms though, they were straight down at his sides. It was like he was doing a Farmer's Walk on the treadmill that lasted for 10 minutes, then he was gone.

Usually the white people (American born) will walk in and go straight to a machine whether they know how to use it or not but it seems the asian people (not native born) have some weird exercise that defies explanation.

I wonder what the difference in culture is and what they've been taught.

I have noticed the same thing.
Interesting bit of trivia:

The asian cultures teach their children to recognize verbs (actions like running) first rather than nouns (apple, car etc).

i think the asians pretty much has gotten it down. You see them out every morning doing their Thai Chi, even the real old people do theire movment in the morning. Yo dont see old people in other countries do that. Its pretty impressive

Well im part asian (philipino and spanish and a tiny bit chinese to be exact) and I gots my shit down!! Hehehe :p

It depends bro it doesn't have anything to do with culture. I see all kinds of races doing some fucked up shit sometimes that cannot be explained.

But were you raised in an Eastern culture or in a Western Culture? I would bet Western and possibly influenced a bit by Eastern based on your heritage.

I'm not saying it has anything to do with "race" per se, but more "culture". I just have no idea what these people are doing when they come into the gym.

No eastern influence here. Hehehe moved here when I was 3 and even though alot of Philipino people from around here I know are influenced, I wasn't. I chill with all races but most the people I grew up with and currently who are my friends are either white or spanish.... Even though I do have enough asian and black friends as well.

there's this one asian guy in the gym who does all these crazy neck movements with lots of weight. he's like in his late 50's. wacky stuff.

LOL actually come to think of it there was this one asain guy the staff used to call Bruce Lee in my old gym I used to P.T. at. He would always do all his movements ballistically(even the pec deck in which he would literally lean real fast into the movent and use his whole body to move the weight and not just his pecs) and scream like he was in a karate match or something. That was pretty amusing to me. :FRlol:

seems to me that asians are probably more fit and less likely to be overweight than everyone else, even if they're doing all this shit the wrong way too.

And pretty much most of the asian folks doing stuff the wrong way are probably fairly new to the US.

asian people = fit? not really. Overweight = no. I would rather say almost all asian people stay lean, im one of the few people I know who is 100% asian and sits in the range of 215-230lbs. Others are just leaned out and have very little muscle on them. I think it relates to the fact that asians are taught at a very young age that gyms are bad and books are good (my dad still preaches this). If more asians got into the gym, I'd respect them more.

BTW: a lot of skinny asian old men I see have crazy ass calves.

What's just as weird as seeing asian people lift is seeing people like Mike P.T. and me. You don't see too many asian bodybuilders. I blame that on ditching the rice at an early age, and substituted protein. :D

I would guess Asian food is less fattening based on observations that Asians tend to be leaner than other races. I rarely see an obese Asian.

there is one crazy 50 year old asian in every gym, I have one and he usally stands on his head and does a ton of arm swaying on ever exercise

I always just assumed he just learned from the yoda of wild arm movement, happyscappy

I've been taught to eat rice and only certain meats. 2 years ago, I said fuck it and dropped the rice and started eating every animal I could find. I have to go with Sexual Mustard on the asian girl thing, I'm just not into them either (except for my 2 avatar girls). Other asian gymrats I know agree with me, maybe it's just that we're not the typical asians so we dont go with the typical asian women (which all of them are). One thing I'll never see is me onstage, even thinking about taking the stage makes me cringe. Props to mustard for having the balls to go onstage as well as all the other people who compete.

Thanks buddy, I do it for the white chicks. :D

i never had much love for asian either, because i was born and raised "white" however ever since moving to Toronto, i have come to realize that some asian girls are unreal in beauty! almost to the point where your jaw just literally drops. so my opinion of asian girls has changed since moving to TO. Sex; have you been to TO?

and about the training thing, you just explained my dad; he has a wooden stool, skipping rope, old tire, bike inter tube, and some two-by fours, and he manages to exhert a full body workout using these "tools" lol! i ask him "why dont you just by weights" he looks up smiles, and says "this is funner"

lol. funny guy

I don't get this post. seriously.
The only weird thing about this is blue jeans.

I don't know about excercise, but I'll tell you one thing I know for certain-

I open the U of A library at 7:00 am Mon-Fri, and the vast majority of people that are walking around campus and using the library in the early morning hours are asian. Also, a lot of the time when an asian person is checking out/in a book, it has something to do with computer programming, engineering, or something else very technical. It's almost initimidating. Hell, more power to them.:)

:D

I know, I know.

I work there, and I currently have three overdue books that have been out so long that they've billed me for them. Until I check them in, I am on record as owing $139. LOL

sad but true; although i am nuthing like this, Some "Fobs" take studying and homework way to seriously, its almost sad how isolated some of them are... im sure you all have seen asians like this. So much pressure is put on them by there parents/peers its brutal. luckily i was raised white so my folks are pretty laid back, but they never neglected to teach me the value of hard work.

I wonder if the early morning thing is that unless you have AC you can FORGET getting anything done 11am-4pm in South East Asia - it's HOT and HUMID. So they have a habit of getting up at 5am that we don't here in the west, that's become a cultural habit?

The odd time I get my lame ass outta bed before 7.30am I do notice that if I did all my work etc early and go home early I would spend a LOT less time waiting in line or in crowds. As regards students and libraries, man, uni libraries get real crowded in the afternoons, I used to go in there at 9am to get books too, that way I didn't have to wait in line for ages...
