It really is bullshit. I understand that the government is trying to breakdown racism in the workplace (which does exist) towards minorities, but they are doing it all wrong. Reverse discrimination is still discrimination.

I'm part of an ethnic minority, but I believe that people should be considered for work or scholarships based on their merrits and not their race or gender.

Affirmative action works in many cases, but in many others it deprives non-minorities, who in many cases are far better qualified than the recepients, of many resources.

Specially in big cities like L.A., N.Y., Chicago, etc.. that are big melting pots of different cultures, race seems to be a lesser issue. I think it probably helps more in midwest and Southern states though.

I lost a job opening about 7 years ago for the same reason. The engineering manager told me straight out that he wanted me for the job, but he was told by upper management to hire the other guy who was black because they needed to for some sort of quota. That really pissed me off, it was a nice position too. I could have probably raised a stink but that would have gotten the engineering manager into trouble, and he was honest with me so I decided to just forget it. Fucking bullshit.
