If the kid cared about his former friend's mother, then yes, he should pay his respects. Not going to the funeral just because the other kid is going to be there is just childish.

If you were good friends, and are fighting with each other at the current time, it'd be nice of you to go and show you care, and feel for his pain. Figiting doesn't erase the friendship you've had.

Going to the funeral has nothing to do with the issues they are fighting about.

It is #1 about showing Respect for the Woman and her life she led.
