you know RAM on a flash drive that I can plug into a USB port on the laptop to make it faster. This is a company piece of shit and I can't stand the 10% faster than dial up speed.

Yes, but it depends on how much RAM you already have? For example, if you've got 512MB then you'd notice a difference. If you got 3GB, then you won't.

god it feels like 128MB

can't be more than 512.

How much is the flash ram listed now?

No, you can by any RAM and use it with your computer via ReadyBoost (for VISTA) or eBooster (for XP) to use that USB FLASH drive as RAM.

It's easy enough to find out how much you've got. Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties".

Via that method the difference won't be as great as you'd like. Even the slowest RAM chip is orders of magnitude faster than any USB flash drive.

Service Pack 1
Windows XP Workstation
Intel Xeon(R) X3323 @ 2.50GHz
64 bit Operating system
Memory (RAM) 24.0 GB

I know damn well it ain't got no 24 gigs of RAM. But that is what it says.

Well, that's true. I guess the other option is to just upgrade the RAM itself.

If you wouldn't take up all that memory with pron, your computer would work better.

lol

no can do because this isn't mine and other agents use it at times.

this is how slow it is. you go to youtube and after clicking on a video, you wait 5 mins and then it starts to play, but you can see it freeze while it loads the next frame.

it is about as capable as one of those dummy terminals that are hooked up to servers to give users the barebones requirements.

Hmmm, sounds more like a problem with your network connection or bad flashplayer install.

there is no flash install at all on this laptop.

I have to use mozilla to even load youtube's page.

but the overall performance and general net surfing ability is seriously crimped. it takes about a minute to refresh the EF page each time.

Proxy server?

Are you blocked from installing Flash?

i guess. I don't know what that is though.

all shit from it for the most part is done on the server back in the HQ

Then you suck (or at least, that's what's written in the local washroom).

Why not just work on your home laptop? I started to bring my own laptop to work and VPN as they started to put more and more restrictions on work laptops.

Excuse me. That's MR FUCKEROO to you.

Why don't you ask you boss for a better one then?

I seriously doubt trying to expand primary RAM via USB drive will give you a speed improvement. Primary RAM is normally wired practically straight into the microprocessor itself and going out on the IOBUS and to a USB connection would be two (especially the latter) major bottlenecks.

Yeah, but it is the only option I have to work with at this point.

I didn't know they had Xeon laptops. That looks more likely to be the specs for your server.

that is what it says under system properties.
but everything goes to the server from here anyway. I can't even save anything to this hard drive.

I'd say that you're just fucked then, as far as system performance goes.

Generally the term "flash" is used for ROM which is erasable and programmable such as the bios chips on computers or digiboards

Now the term "flash" is used for USB drives and memory stick readers since the technology has probably been enhanced to where it is usable forcertainkinda of memory storage

How is this associated with your internet connection

OOh I see what you mean now
Windows Vista has a tool called ReadyBoost which is just that , you can put your swap file on a usb drive

For Windows XP you can use something called eboostr which can use compact flash or USB drives for cache ram. http://www.eboostr.com/
You'll still need a swap file for use with eboostr so it's not as helpful.

This is probably a laptop so the best thing would be is upgrade to Vista and turn a ubs drive or memory card reader (or both if you have the devices) into ready boost devices

Like they're going to let him upgrade the operating system when they won't even give him Admin access to his own machine?
