Is it OK to tip before the service?

I don`t go out to the same places to eat that often. So I am not a regular anywhere. I always leave a good tip, but that does`nt help me when I`m leaving and not coming back for 6 months or never. lol

Would it be stupid to leave a good tip BEFORE I get served so the waitperson can rest easy and not wonder if they`re gonna get tipped or whatever? I know they appreciate it when I leave, but that does me no good.

I would just do it casually, "Do you mind if I tip you before the meal?" While handing her the money.

Damn, I just read what I wrote and it`s crazy. lol but I want to hear responses.

I tip the bartender nicely when he brings my first round, then maybe again, more modestly, when I leave. I always get great service that way.

I do this at bars too, but I wouldn't ever bother at a restaurant. Are you really going to calculate the cost of your meal before you get the check?

Never thought about the bar/alcohol part. That`s a good idea. Definately will do that.

What if you tip first and the service sucks, then you'll twice as unsatisfied.
I used to tip too much, then they actually hate you cause your stupid.

I always tip more than the minimum anyway. No matter how the service was. If it was really good I tip even more.

These people rely on tips for thier income. I would think they`re happy to see a big tip, not "What a moron".

If you think someone will hate you for overtipping then you are retarded. Why would comeone dislike you forgiving them too much money???

ya, they may rely on tips, so to say, but they still make a wage.... they are actually just lucky that they make "extra" money through getting tips... i dont see anyone leaving me a tip on my desk every time they come and bug me while i'm working..

i hate hearing that.. "these people rely on their tips"... i mean, fuck off.... if they didnt get a paycheque, then I would agree, but fuck, after they get their paycheque, and add up all their tips for the last pay period, they are making a seriously good wage.

having said that, I leave big tips all the time, unless i get shitty service, then i leave nothing.

I know a waitress that makes $2+ an hour Plus tips. You think that is a wage? That`s not even minimum wage. They DO rely on tips for their income. It`s not extra.

i always thought that minimum wage was the law?

i leave a 15% tip

For dinner I would say never tip first. If you are @ a nicer restraunt they have a good idea a tip is coming.

As for bartenders the first tip lets them know make the drinks strong all night long.

If you tip them ahead of time, what do they have to give you good service for ?
The only exception is the mentioned bar staff because you are going to ask them to service you repeatedly and watch for when you need something vs the scripted meal service..

Bad waitstaff is bad waitstaff, regardless of tip amount generally speaking..
Good Waitstaff are professionals regardless, and therefore get good tips even from cheap tippers..
