is firefox better than internet explorer?

pros:
faster
more customizable
safer

cons
some IE only sites don't work right.

Some of the extensions are pure genius. I have one that lets me open sites in IE in a firefox tab. My banking site doesn't like firefox so I use it there.

I haven't used IE in a long time so no idea if it has been improved since. But I switched to Firefox because IE sucked, if that helps.

My only complaint with firefox is that my back and forward buttons on my mouse will not work with it.

Question for Dial_tone or anyone:

What's the best Java Virtual Machine out there? I've got the MS one on my system, and I think Firefox has some issues with it. The only symptom that I'm seeing is that I cannot log onto Cyber-Rights mail with Firefox, but I can with IE.

If I installed the Sun JVM, or IBM JVM, or whatever JVM, would I first need to un-install the MS JVM?

I use Opera. I used Firefox for quite a few months but switched to Opera since it has a handy switch to fit the screen to my window width and I just stuck with it. It can pretend to be IE when needed and even has an option to see the pics behind the yellow frog. It's customizable in lots of other ways and many features I'll not even mention since I take them for granted and haven't used IE in a long time. I recommend Firefox but I use Opera most of the time now. Does IE have tabbed browsing? I can't remember.

Mr. DB, I don't use Windows much anymore but the Sun JVM is the 'real' one. The only danger is that some people have programmed to expect something peculiar about the MS one. It's all done though plugins and they are versioned. I can't offer any guarantee but I'd strongly expect there to be no need to remove the MS one when moving to the Sun one. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp . You'd want the jre rather than the jdk.

I've used Opera a few years ago and there was a free version with a frame with ads and a shareware version

Is it still the case?

I believe that's so. I managed to grab a code for the mac version, when they gave them away on their anniversary, which turns the free version into the full version. As such, I never had to tolerate ads. The codes are probably floating around the 'Net.

On a side note there are rumors that Opera had been bought by Google...

I run Sun Java, When you install it, it automatically registers itself as the default.

No tabs in IE. Perhaps in the next version...

Thanks!

BTW, I grabbed the free full version of Opera on their anniversary giveaway too. I believe that since then they have gone to the free browser business model and no longer make cheap people use the adware version.

IE7 will have tabs. I use the Sun JVM and I have no problems anywhere. You actually can't even get the MS JVM anymore. Sun forced them to stop offering it because it wasn't according to specs. Like every other open standard MS tried to put their own proprietary hooks into it.

I just switched over from IE to Firefox; still trying to get used to some features with FF.

As an interesting side-note, I'm finding less adware from surfing, when I scan my comp with Ad-Aware.....

...but, when I clean with CCleaner, I generally have a lot more MBs worth of trash.
