Is DREAMWEAVER pretty learnable on one's own?

I don't want to become employed as a web designer, but would like to play around and make better webpages for myself, would Dreamweaver be pretty self taught? Or another kind of program?

meaning that what you see on your screen is what you get. It tries to take as much of the "coding" element out of the program as it can. At least on the user-end.

So basically, there is "An Idiots Guide to Dreamweaver" that would give me what I need?

I wouldn't waste my money on a book. There's an abundance of free information on the net.

well, i would say that i would guess you might not really even need a tutorial... but try that.

anyway, it's really easy to use. i never used a tutorial or anything when i used it.

You don't need any kind of tutorial whatsoever. Just think of something you want to do and try to do it. You can probably learn every practical feature of Dreamweaver or any other WYSIWYG editor in 1-2 hours of usage. No need for a book. Tutorials and references are available throughout the Internet. You can even take it a step further and learn HTML/JavaScript yourself (http://www.pageresource.com). There are tons of cool things you can do by getting down and dirty with some code that you can't easily (or can't at all) do with an editor.

Enjoy.

Yeah.. and don't drive a car, walk everywhere.. its much more rewarding.

And don't use cameras, just sketch the subject you'd like to talk a picture of.

And don't type letters or resumes or correspondances, hand write them.

And when you're writing, don't use a normal pencil sharpener.. whittle away your pencil with a knife.

Technological advancements.. boo hiss boo.

It's not as intuitive as frontpage since frontpage that's so much like MS Word but Dreamweaver isn't incredibly hard to learn and you'll be better off for knowing it. Frontpage often makes me wanna scream because totally screws up your code.

Yep it's easy to learn. Find and replace is my best friend in the world. Sometimes image slices break up for no reason and you have to snap the tables to size 500 times until it mystically works, but if you aren't doing huge graphics that shouldn't matter.

You still need to know a little HTML, just to be able to change something quickly. I love Dreamweaver, the ftp alone is worth the money for you spend for it.

I also love the fact that you can make rollover button so quickly and I don't have to type up the Javascript.
