i have to format my pc, because i just have too much crap and shit slowing it down, even though it is a pretty pimped out pc.

i dont feel like putting win xp back on, and i dont feel like putting linux on, because i still need my laptop to be semi-productive...so, i was thinking about vista.

it's new, so why not try it out....?

I thought about it, but I not going to buy ANOTHER graphics card just to ensure that an OS runs smoothly.

So what's the deal? I'm trying to decide right now if I should upgrade to vista, are there any beni's or is it just more MS junk? I have a new laptop but am looking to bounce to a mac, does anyone know any web designers on EF btw? Thanks.

im hearing about a ton of driver issues, I would love to know though because I want to have my boss order me a copy...."for training purposes"

One of the 'features' of Windows Vista is that it will monitor the software on your computer and if it finds software which Microsoft feels would compromise the Windows OS or their standards, then Vista will remove said software without your consent or knowledge.

Overall, Vista amounts to nothing more than visual asthetics and a relinquishing of your privacy.

Buy a MAC.

BS....thats an over-exaggeration im sure from the MAC (anti-windows) community...someone probably referred to spyware or virii being removed automatically and twisted it around into saying microsoft is going to uninstall your programs. Macs are gay for everyday use. i dont edit videos/music so its useless to me. The interface of Windows makes much more sense and I have used both.

take your tinfoil hat off and relax.

Vista incorporates Windows Defender, a security program that actively scans computers for 'spyware, adware, and other potentially unwanted software'. The Vista user agreement, however, does not define any of these terms, leaving it to Microsoft to determine what constitutes unwanted software. Once operational, the agreement warns that Windows Defender will, by default, automatically remove software rated 'high' or 'severe' even though that may result in other software ceasing to work or mistakenly result in the removal of software that is not unwanted.

These are the terms you, 'the user', agree to when you install VISTA.

i doubt anything of relevance will be removed. there is always shit like this at the beginning of a big release...like it said..all the paranoi is just bullshit from the anti-microsoft community.

MICROSOFT VISTA USER AGREEMENT and not anti-microsoft community said:
6. POTENTIALLY UNWANTED SOFTWARE.

If turned on, Windows Defender will search your computer for “spyware,”
“adware” and other potentially unwanted software. If it finds potentially
unwanted software, the software will ask you if you want to ignore, disable
(quarantine) or remove it. Any potentially unwanted software rated “high” or
“severe,” will automatically be removed after scanning unless you change the
default setting. Removing or disabling potentially unwanted software may
result in
·
other software on your computer ceasing to work, or
·
your breaching a license to use other software on your computer.

By using this software, it is possible that you will also remove or disable
software that is not potentially unwanted software.

The 'user agreement' does not define any of the terms 'spyware', 'adware', 'high', 'severe', 'unwanted software' which Vista will use in determining a 'potential' threat. In some cases, this will be at the sole discretion of Microsoft. If you are comforatable with that, then install it. If not, then don't.

My tin-foil hat is starting to look a little thin so please excuse me while I add a new piece.

Excellent move, MS. Define the terms of the agreement, but don't define the wording of the agreement. BRILLIANT!

use XP.

Vista is not worth the upgrade yet. I get a free copy for being in the college of engineering at my school - have it installed as a second OS on my computer. I prefer XP. And driver issues have again caused it to be worthless compared to XP.

I wouldn't use it until its been out atleast a year. They rushed getting that os
out the door. IMO learn linux.
My rule is service pack 2 but saying linux is the wave of the future for desktops....heard that since the 1990's. Microsoft has proven that medicore software with a huge marketing arm will dominate. Just sayin' :)

The Cult Of Steven True Believers are out in force spreading FUD and misinformation about Vista.

I had to buy a new computer the other day. Both of my computers had their motherboards go out (they were very old). The one I got has Vista on it. It is a bunch of eye candy really. As far as the software removal goes, you can set it so that it asks you before removing the software from your computer. I have not had any problems yet, but I haven't really sat down and messed with it too much.

how do you get a free copy of it for being a student?

which version?
There was lots of beta versions going around before the real release. Trust me no one is ever getting anything free from Microsoft Bill didn't get rich by just giving shit away.

What is trully funny is right now for Vista Enterprise licensing you can only install it if you already have XP pre installed on the system. I have had more then a few clients going WTF over this  Oh the joys of Microsoft. Seriosly wait tell the service pack 2 comes out on this before giving it a go.

how do i get a l/p

you'd have to take it up with your school. Contact someone in your department. At my school its really only the technical majors that are eligible.

and you havent used your oink account at all. wtf?

I know I suck.

I was running into memory issues with my main rig, so I'm on my secondary right now. My 2 gigs of memory is bad, gives me constant errors - I'm in the process of returning it. So yeah, I'll get on that when I get it up and running.

or just when you install XP create another partition during the install then install Vista on that partition
