I'm bored so I'm just going to write some stuff and then watch you guys ignore me.
As most here know, steroids are hormones. Molecules classified as steroids are lipids, or more specifically are derivatives of cholesterol. The cholesterol precursor comes from freshly synthesized cholesterol, ester stores within the cell, or from the uptake of lipoproteins containing cholesterol. Briefly, lipoproteins are balls of lipids surrounded by a coating of protein that render the ball water-soluble (lipids are insoluble in water) which facilitates transportation in the blood.
The first step of steroid synthesis is the formation of pregnolone. This also is the rate-limiting step. Pregnolone is formed on the inner membrane of mitochonria and is shuttled between the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrion. During this shuttling process various enzymes transorm the molecule into different steroid hormones.
Once formed, the steroids are rapidly excreted from the cell and so are usually not stored within it. Steroids bind somewhat to plasma proteins and this binding is not specific most of the time. However, some steroids DO bind to and are transported by particular proteins. This binding affects the half-life and the rate at which elimination occurs.
So, off the steroids go to bind to their target cell receptors which are found INSIDE cells. Only steroids and thyroid hormones bind to their receptors inside cells. Other hormones (catecholamines, eichosanoids, and protein and peptide hormones).
Elimination of steroids occurs by means of various metabolites and are excreted through urine and bile. So there.
