some asshole fraudulently signed my EF account up to a lot of shit automatic email sending sites, but i have their IP, can i do anything with it? e.g., find out who they are and send a little payback their way?

i don't know much about this so any help is much appreciated...karma to anyone who helps me.

strange...i just tracked out who this asshole is and he's apparently a scammer too. can i post his info here? i'd like to expose this piece of shit, is there a correct way of doing it though?

Not really. You need a court order to legally and easily found out who someone is by their IP number. That's why the RIAA and has been fighting ISPs in court to find out who their customer were. The RIAA had the IP numbers of people uploading files but didn't have names. Now if you are a bad ass enough hacker you could find it I'd guess but that's the slim minority of folks and if were that you'd probably wouldn't be asking.

change your password frequently, don't give it out, make it long, include letters in both upper and lower case, numbers, special characters, don't base it on a dictionary word, blah blah blah

I think when people say the are checking IP it's to see if the same person doing whatever BS under a different handle. IP numbers are also useful in reporting internet abuse to someone's ISP even if you don't know exactly who they are.
