I saw this from the t-mag and though I should share.
Q: What have you heard about Interleukin-6 use amongst the pros? I hear that several of them are injecting this into weak muscle groups and getting phenomenal results. Is this possible?
A: Have you ever heard the saying, "a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing"? Well, this is a prime example.
Over the last few months, I've done quite a bit of research on growth factors, including the interleukins and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF). Is this because I think that they will be the next great breakthrough? Have I been getting a woody, flicking through all the biotechnology catalogues trying to locate them? Do I believe that these are the closely kept secret behind Ronnie Coleman's biceps peaks? No! I've been looking at these because the wife of a friend has been diagnosed with motor neuron disease, an awful and terminal wasting disease.
Some of these growth factors, like LIF, show some promise with this horrifying condition. Soon there will be a recombinant LIF product released for exactly this kind of condition. However, SOON in medical language still means a long way off. Obtaining reasonable quantities at an affordable price from biotech companies is like finding rocking horse shit.
Interleukins are a group of cytokines — molecules that regulate cell function. They can be either pro or anti-inflammatory and are involved in the body's signaling processes. The fine balance between protein synthesis and protein degradation is maintained by some of them (18 have been identified), and this is where the information about interleukin-6 has been misinterpreted.
Another misinterpretation I have had quoted to me involved the fact that elevated interleukin-6 is found during muscle trauma, such as that induced by intense exercise. What the individual failed to understand was that this was part of the catabolic response to stress. Elevated interleukin-6 is part of the process that causes wasting in cancer.
Back to your original question, yes there are a handful of bodybuilders who have experimented with interleukin-6, although I have only actually spoken with one. He claimed that he made gains from using it, but then he'd also go out searching for sheep eggs if I told him that they were the ideal protein source.
In general, there may still be a lot to learn about the role of interleukin-6, but the evidence indicates a negative impact from self-administration, so give this one a miss.
Currently, I am exploring the anabolic potential of LIF and interleukin-15. Both of these look as though they may be of benefit when it comes to site injections. LIF has demonstrated the ability to stimulate myoblast proliferation and muscle regeneration when applied after muscle injury.
The combined administration of interleukin-15 and IGF-1 has resulted in an additive effect that included a 500% increase in muscle-specific heavy chain myosin! Unfortunately, the limiting factor with these growth factors is price — you will probably never be able to afford the optimal dosage.
I will keep you posted on the results obtained on my lab rats…
