insulin resistant?

musclebosun

New member
after getting treated for gyno, [natural, not juice induced] my blood works showed that i had really low test levels. All of a sudden my life started to make sense. ie, for years i have never been able to get lean no matter how hard i trained or how smart/hard i dieted. I could gain muscle but after anymore than 2-3 weeks off i would start to lose my gains real quick. I started to do some research and one of the causes of low test is being insulin resistant. I understand what this is but i don't understand what causes it or what the treatment for it is or if that is in fact what i have. I will be seeing an endocrinologist to get more info but till then does anyone out their have any info or personal experience with this to help a brother out?

its unlikely that you are insulin resistant. unless you experience polydipsia (drinking a lot), frequent fatigue, n/v, palpitations and headaches, it is not the cause. You probably have either

1. minor hypogonadism
2. hypothyroidism

what is your age? do you have any other autoimmune disorders (they travel in groups)? sex drive or erectile dysfunction? low body temp or cold intollerence? dry mucosal surfaces (mouth)?

NFG

answers in order are
24
no
sex drive fine
body temp/tolerance fine
no.

can you explain hypogonadism and hypothyroidism? never heard of them. I'll be doing a google anyways but in the meantime...
p.s k 4 your help bro.

Is there a way to test how insulin resistant a person it?
Yes, indirectly through a glucose tolerance test.

Sorry, I've been away for a while. Had to do a little bit of anti-terrorist action. (Yep, I got to kick some ass!)

I'm a 43 Y.O. type II diabetic. ie. insulin resistant. From what I understand you can't test directly for insulin resistance. Only for the symptom of such, which is high glucose.
Mine comes from genetic, which is a major cause, & lifestyle which is a minor cause. I understand the ratio of these 2 causes is about a 70/30 split. This means that, although genetics plays a major part, diet & exercise habits can have a significant impact.
After diagnosis I found I had other problems. Sleep apnea, loooooooow test, E.D. I'm currently under treatment for all of these, but the diabetes is an ongoing struggle.
Good luck.

Obstructive sleep apnea is undertreated. Most people do not realize the health risks associated with OSA. I did research on this while in medical school. The effects of this can be deadly: heart failure, heart attacks, pulmonary hypertension, etc. This isn't even to mention the problems associated with being tired all the time and risking accidents while driving.

I never realized how prevalent it is 'til I went to get checked. My excessive snoring was causing a problem with the Mrs.. I was also not getting enough rest for the sleep I was getting. I use a CPAP machine, have been for a year now. Still can't quite get used to it. Some nights I can sleep 8 hrs with it. Other nights I take it off in my sleep after only 1 or 2 hrs. I'm getting checked for sinus problems, 'cause I always get stuffed up when I recline.
All these conditions I have, have been shown to be inter-related to some extent.
