Increasing Wireless Internet Speed - Help Needed

SC4EVA

New member
OK - I need some help here from the tech people. I have a laptop and some Dell wireless router. They do not work perfectly together at all (Love to disconnect ever 20 mins) My main concern or question this is downloading from Rapid Share or Internet etc I only appear to be pulling 120-150kb? Isn't that crazy slow for cable? I had my friend download the same file the other day and was able to get 400kb+. What am I doing wrong? Do I need new router/laptop? It’s a Dell I 600M with I believe that 801.g thingy. K for helpful responses!

cable / dsl connection speeds are highly conditional.

You may only get 140 out of your connection whereas you next door neighbor may have a the same service and get 300k. Your friend you mentioned - they used their own broadband connection? Or were they simply piggy-backing on your wireless / cable modem and downloading?

First thing to do is take a look at your wireless signal strength. Report back. Just drop back to 802.11b - it is not as fast as G - but your throughput bottleneck here is the cablemodem - at sub 400k - not 10mb wireless. Trust me. 802.11b is more reliable than N, G... whatnot.

If none of that works - look on manufactures websites for firmware AND driver updates for both the wireless card in your laptop and for the wireless access point. Update across the board.

One other way to test - possibly - if you can plug a CAT5 cable between your laptop and your cablemodem. Eliminate wireless and anything else... if you can get a network connection like that test your speed.

Do a search on google for 'broadband SPEED TEST" I think speakeasy has a decent one.

also, maybe your modem needs a changing too.

Is it the motorola surfboard? I would go with the d-link if I could do it again.

Like everyone else has said, cable speeds are variable. I bet your wirless modem isnt very good either.

No - They were using their own service/system. This all came to my attention because my local ISP (Comcast) promotes the new increase of speed they provide and I need to d/l my porn faster.

Sorry to Sound like a dumb ass but you lost me here

I will also try this tonight - I'll get back with what the results are. Thanks!

get us the make and model# of your router.

do a speed test (cnet.com has one, google it) when plugged directly into your cable modem - and then through your wireless where you usually use your computer. (be sure to clear cookies between tests)

I ll check this out when I get home. I know the wireless card came pre-installed with Laptop and Dell Router was thrown in.

How many years do you guys keep a laptop before replacing?

laptops are fragile items. In my opinion its best not to go cheap on them, but rather go to a retailer like BestBuy (I fucken hate Bestbuy btw) and get a 3 year warranty.

Shit will hit the fan within 2 years, dead battery, LCD screen, that jack that your powercord goes into.

But keep them until they die. If it starts acting weird its usually cause windows was getting bogged down with crap - then reformat.

Ditto on running a speed test with the laptop connected directly to the cable modem to take the router out of the mix. That will tell you the max speed you can get throught the cable modem.

Then check again using the wireless and see if you lose speed or if its the same.
802.11G should be as high as 54Mbps.. Way faster than cable speeds

That will tell you if its the cable or the router..

I went 3MB DSL for the reason of cable being so variable throughout the day depending on how many people around you were using it.
DSL now has speeds available as fast as Cable these days

It may be a bit slower for the $, but it usually is what it is 24x7..

ok, this could contributed to numerous factors.

are you running XP SP2? one of the updates for SP2 really fucked with many people's connection to the internet. there is a fix out there, but i dont have the address on hand.

secondly, i had an issue similar to that, and it was because winsock got fucked up. there is a program that fixes it - i think it's called winsockfix.

even if you dont have any problems, relating to software, it could simply be where you are downloading from. if i download a torrent with 50 seeds and 500 leechers, it's going to be slower than if i download a torrent with 500 seeds and 50 leechers - in other words, it all depends on the bandwidth available.

even if it is web based, your friend might be downloading the file when the server isnt as busy or your friend might not have to make as many hops to connect to the server he downloading from.

is your wireless connection secured? someone else might be stealing it and downloading gigs of child porn with it, thus slowing down your connection, and getting the FBI knocking at your door. connect to your router and check who is connected under the DHCP client list.

is your computer filled with spyware? there are many backdoor programs 'hackers' (script kiddies) use to takeover another computer and use its bandwidth for all sorts of malicious shit.

if you are downloading torrents, are your selected ports opened and properly forwarded? if not, that will drastically slow down connections.

what sort of firewall are you using?

Ok - hopefully I can keep adding instead of multiple posts - Turns out the internal wireless card is 802.11b (Intel (R) Pro/Wireless 2100 LAN miniPCI Adapter) - Going to d/l the drivers for the card are router and see if any progress. BTW says speed on PC is 11mps.
UPDATE 1

Did the speakeasy test with the wireless - RESULTS are
Last Result:
Download Speed: 1973 kbps (246.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 355 kbps (44.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

UPDATE 2
Wireless off - connected directly to router
Last Result:
Download Speed: 3321 kbps (415.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 354 kbps (44.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Cant connect directly to modem for some reason - Not sure if laptop has all the logins etc. will keep moving

Your numbers seem decent... connected directly to the router. Honestly.

I am suprised at the significant drop in speed when wireless though, test a few times on wireless again and post results.

I think you are okay orb, that specific site you were downloading form may have been slow at the time you were hitting it. These are better numbers than I put up with my cable modem. You could do some tweaking, but honestly, cable modems and DSL service is SO conditional... differs from house to house. Luck of the draw maing.

I hear you bro - Gonna check it out some more - Mostly when I was d/ling from Rapidshare - Only other concern is getting bumped off so much

Download Speed: 3958 kbps (494.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 359 kbps (44.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
