If you burn DVDs

Compusa has an obscenely good price on their DVD-R. $20 for a pack of 50. I've used them myself and felt they were pretty good although they were only 2x :(

It's a good deal but 2x only. I'm already having a hard time finding anything over 4x...

There is really no reason to by an 8x burner or definately no reason to buy a dual layer burner now. The technology is too new. 4x will be the way to go for at least another year. Everyone I've seen has been having mainly bad burns with 8x. If I was buying a new burner I POSSIBLY would buy and 8x but no way would I run out and buy an 8x if I already have a working 4x unless I just wanted to have another burner.

Are you guys copying DVD movies? How is it done?

To copy a DVD you'd can go about it any number of ways. It's like asking what plus what equals 100?

One easy way is to use DVD shrink, DVD Decrypter and burning software. I like Nero but you can burn with DVD Decrypter. DVD shrink is a point and click way of copying a DVD. It's not going to give you the best possible quality but get that it's a long drawn out process. I just use DVD Shrink. If the DVD is encrypted (most but not all retail DVDs are) you have to decrypt it with DVD Decryptor and save the files to a folder on your hard drive. Then you can shrink with DVD Shrink fit on a DVD-R. Retail DVDs hold 9 GBs while a DVD-R hold 4.7GB really it's 4.4GB for most practical purposes.

DVD Shrink and DVD Decryter are freeware so there are easy to get.

My Dell came with a 8x DVD burner so I'm stuck with it.

That's cool. Just burns with good media at 4x and you are good. You'd just been throwing money away on 8x discs anyway IMO. What's the point of burning at 8x if the DVD is skipping like a muthafucka or doesn't play at all?

Well that's my problem: I haven't been able to experience this cause I can't find any 8x DVDs. But I remember when the first 12x CD burner came. They sucked balls too...

If you want 8x discs you are going to have to buy them online. I don't think big name stores will carry them until they become a little more realiable.

There are several place to go if you really want them. Here's one.

My brother picked up a few hundred of them yesterday...good investment.

Lol. I'm going to pick up about 300 more before the week is up. And I think Pioneer/Plextor makes the best burner. Lite-on seems ok. And this site is a good one to get you started on what's what.
