Wayne strongly supported Hollywood's anti-communist drive
Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin was so angered by John Wayne's anti-communism that he plotted to have him murdered, according to a new biography of the Hollywood legend.
John Wayne: The Man behind the Myth, by British writer Michael Munn, says there were several attempts on the actor's life in the 1950s.
In one instance, the book says, two Russian hit men posing as FBI agents visited Wayne at his office in Hollywood - but were foiled by real agents who knew about the plot.
Mr Munn told BBC News Online that he pieced together the truth about the various attempts through interviews with Hollywood figures - including Orson Welles and Wayne himself - over the past 30 years.
Mr Munn said Stalin was enraged when he heard about Wayne's anti-communist activities in the late 1940s - when Hollywood blacklisted those perceived as Soviet sympathisers.
"Stalin decided Wayne had to die," Mr Munn says.

However, he adds, the FBI got wind of a Soviet plot and was prepared when two hit men called at Wayne's office at Warner Brothers studios in 1951, posing as federal agents.
The book says the would-be killers were captured, and later requested asylum in the US.
It also says the Soviet campaign was cancelled after Stalin's death in 1953, because his successor Nikita Khrushchev was a fan of the film star.
"That was a decision of Stalin during his last five mad years. When Stalin died I rescinded that order," the book quotes Khrushchev as telling Wayne during a private meeting in 1958.
Burbank battle
But the book says American communists took up the cudgels against Wayne - who was also known as the Duke.
Mr Munn says that in 1955 a group of communists based in Burbank, near Hollywood, plotted to kill him.
However, he adds, a group stuntmen loyal to the Duke raided the premises of his Burbank enemies and "ran them out of town".
Mr Munn also says Wayne told him in 1974 that he survived another attempt by a sniper during a visit to US troops in Vietnam in 1966.
Wayne died of cancer in 1979.
The book, published in London by Robson Books, covers many other aspects Wayne's life and career - including his meteoric rise, unsuccessful marriages and difficult relationship with his children.

I used to say I was socially liberal and fiscally conservative.
But then I realized that being fiscally conservative is worse than being socially liberal.
Pure capitalism, when left unchecked, will lead to almost ALL of the wealth in the country being held by VERY few people. I don't think anyone wants that.
Look at Donald Trump's children, they are all going to be filthy rich. Do you think that the children born to a single mom in an inner city ghetto will have the same opportunities?

Your argument is off point on the fiscal conservative. It has to do with spending and taxation and growth of government.
You could be like Al Gore, Hillary Clinton or especially Dick Gephardt and want everyone to work for the government but I think that taxation penalization for people that are successful can go overboard and encourages the flight of capital from the US.
Also, fiscal conservative is keeping spending checked to balance the social liberalism on certain issues. The tax and spend liberal is what ruins this country.
The welfare plan penalized for example poor black couples in the sixties and seventies for the man to be around by limiting the 'dole' they received, in effect, social engineering single moms in the black community. The reasoning, if you have a man around, then you need less money and so the system encouraged non-marriage and we can see the effects sociologically today.
Just one example of liberals and beyond idiocy in able to comprehend matters more than a few years in length.
The fiscal conservative takes into account, basically, what is best for the country's health in the long term. Issues being social security reform etc...
I know ALOT about finance and financial planning and dealing with the insane hoops to jump through written by a democratic congress is ridiculous.
The "luxury tax' example is classic, they put a tax on luxury items, the rich stop buying those items, all the blue-collar yacht builders in the Northeast lose their job. Penalizing the trade of goods.
There are many facets to all of these issues and how they blend in together, many have to be taken on a case by case basis. Pigeonholing is bad and labelling someone.
Remember the famous line from Wayne's World: "if you label me, you negate me"
If you slap a label on yourself, you will lose friends b/c someone will always have a prejudice against whatever label you list.

I am in, and dictatorship is NOT a conservative idea. Probably not Liberal either. Extreme one way or other.
Someone posted here or elsewhere conservatives were whiners and users as youths. I think this made them realize the only way to get what you want is to work for yourself and take it.
Libs on the other hand, must have sat back and accepted what was going on or given to them, and now they think it should be that way.

I am an Anarchist. Governments are nothing more than people supported mafia. We allow these fucks to overtax us, dictate what is right and wrong. The only guiding principal in a law should be if one infringes on anothers right to the pursuit of happiness (theft or violence). How does purchasing a drug or prostitution qualify as either of those? In fact, it is the government infringing on the pursuit of happiness. I would like nothing more than all governments to be totally collapsed and the world slip into chaos. Then line up all the politicians and gut them like fish.
