I think I have a hernia, Have some pain in my inguinal region, it comes and goes depending on my position. It started today really pronounced after I did abs. I did chest before that. Over that past few months I have noticed every now and then a Heavy feeling in my sack so I lowered weight on certain excercises, but I think it popped today.

Questions- Anyone have this before?
How long will I be out of the gym?
How painful is it going to be to correct?
Will I be back in full force after it heals?
Should I do some Test or EQ while I am out of the gym to preserve mass?
Can I still do cardio?

Thanks!

PG

Well, I had something similar (not a full Hernia but the first stages) and it was because I was holding my breath while lifting.

I know 40butpumpin had a double hernia and the last time I spoke to him he was squatting 550lbs

Ok here is my experience with hernias. I first had one 9 years ago, felt it give way while busting a nut on the leg press. It felt like a quick tug on my right nut. I had discomfort on my right hip area and felt like I pulled a stomach muscle. I continued to work out for about a month after that thinking I pulled something. Finally I went to the doc because the irritation across my hip wouldn't go away. A hernia was detected and was sent to the surgeon. The procedure was with a scope through the belly button and two small incisions above each hip, they used a mesh to patch the hole. Pain was not bad, had it done on a Thursday and was back to work on Monday. Was told to take 6 weeks off working out, came back slow, the biggest problem was the mental part of being afraid I would re-injure. After a slow come back I was eventually doing more weight than when before the injury. Eight years later doing bent over rows where you are on a platform with your chest on a pad ,I tore the same area. This time the surgeon stated it was not recommended to do another scope but he wanted to do the normal incision in the lower abdomen and patch that way. Almost 8 years to the day of my first surgery I was in for the second. This time the pain was incredible and I almost passed out when I stood up to leave. I was back to work after 2 weeks and off the gym for 6. I had read on here before about guys getting back to it in no time at all and especially while on a cycle. I still get swelling and have had to get a inquinal nerve block which is basically a cortisone shots in that nerve where the hernia is. It has been a year and a half since the last surgery. Just go get it fixed so you can start the rehab, good luck.

i am having a slight pain in that region also. The trainer at my school told me to not do abs for two weeks. It doesnt seem to bother me when i do anything else

I had a hernia right above my manhood when I was about 7 years old -- I cried and cried and cried -- then again I was 7.

I had a pretty nasty one when I was about 20. The surgery can be minor to fairly serious (at least to me) depending on the severity.

There are two ways they can fix it a) the normal slice you up and fix it way. b) laparoscopic (spelling?) which uses a camera and makes small incisions. I believe the recovery from option b) is quite quick. I however went under option a) and missed about 1.5 weeks of school. I didn't start lifting until about 8 weeks later, but even then I took it pretty easy.

Almost 5 years later I barely notice it, but every once in a while it seems to get a little sore, but then it goes away.

Went to the doc today, I have a direct inguinal hernia. Made an appointment with the surgeon in a week and a half. All this hard work and now I have to take a bunch of time of . Lame

bro, I had double hernia surgery (laproscopic with a mesh) and was training a week later and three weeks later was back and 100% of volume and intensity of my entire routine, and haven't looked back since. the only reason I wasn't at that one week after the surgery was due to general soreness that was unique to my type of surgery.

bro, believe me you should find a doc that does this laproscopic surgery and make sure he uses a mesh. with that type of surgery there is 2 tiny incisions (approx. 1/4" to 1/2" in length) and they put the mesh on the inside of the muscle. hernia recurrence rate is <0.5%. there's no sewing or cutting of muscle tissue at all.

as i said, there's not really pain in this type of surgery but rather discomfort. they blow you up with a gas to make room for them to see and place the mesh. some of that gas gets left in there and takes a few weeks to dissolve. this gas, as it takes up volume, moves around inside of you and can cause some discomfort. but that's all the pain there is.

when you're done you can do anything, and i mean anything at all. in fact, i could do a hell of a lot more after because i could deadlift and squat w/o any pain at all which was not the case before. so yes, cardio you can definitely do.

but this only goes for the type of surgery that i had. my understanding is that the traditional type of surgery is much different and requires months to heal, and has a much higher recurrence rate.

if you have the lap surgery with a mesh, you won't have to worry about preserving muscle mass.

insurance paid for the entire thing too. :)

good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.
