....is your SSN protected uner the right to privacy act?

it is only supposed to be divulged for certain purposes, and disclosure is supposed to be voluntary.

Not sure what the "right to privacy act" is - do you mean protected from "freedom of information act" requests?

THis is the deal....I attend a mandatory inservice for my gym about Hippa......Health Insurance confidentiality deal.

At the sign in sheet. beside my name was my SSN....in plain sight for all to see....and I have medical records on site that can be accessed by that ssn......I asked about it and was told that my ssn is not "federally covered."

I think its bullshit personally and got pissy about it.....here we are discussing patient confidentiality and all 450 hospital employees's ssn are in plain view....

I think you answered my question as it was NOt voluntary and I scratched thru mine and was written up for it.

What little I know about it. They can ask you for your social security number. You don't have to give it to them, and in turn they don't have to provide you with service. So you not giving them your social security number I suppose is grounds for you not being able to participate in the inservice, which would be grounds for writing you up.

On the other hand, they are leaving 450 social security numbers out for everyone to see. Which I don't believe they can do, and that is the avenue I would pursue.

Correct - they has the ssn PRINTED in big letters becide our names to initial as we filed into the room.

I got written up for blacking my ssn out...not about signing in.

All I have heard is that it (SSN) is not protected under any specific federal law. State by state is different.

But they are working on Federal legislation to create such guidelines as to who can use the FULL SSN..
You will see more people use partial SSN and name to identify
and protect you.

Good read from EPIC site..

Uh....

As I understand it, it's supposed to be illegal for anyone to ask for your SSN other than for Social Security purposes. Your employer is an obvious exception because they pay social security taxes on your pay.

However, it's a muddled issue. Laws change, and the law that prohibits the use of the SSN for non SS purposes is rather old but never amended or recinded.

If you challenge places, you often get around it. Even DMVs are pushing for the info, but the matter is you have to go to court (most likely) to get a ruling. Not really expensive to do, but time consuming, and you have to do it before you need your DL or you basically are denied one until the court sides with you and orders the DMV to do without the information.

In today's world, I suspect many courts would force you to give it saying "times had changed."

However, it was the very fear of men being given a "number without which he can not buy or sell" that prompeted the original law limiting the SSN to only SS purposes.

guys....again - its not about me giving it......its abou tTHEM giving it out for all the world to see beside the signin line...

Not true. Anyone can ask for it. You just don't always have to give it out. For instance the DMV will request your soc for your drivers license, but in most states (maybe all now) they will no longer print it on your license. You have the right to refuse to give your social security number to people, but in some instances they have the right not to provide you with the service.

I think the biggest problem in Corn's situation is the fact that they were not safeguarding 450 social security numbers by leaving them available for public consumption.

Exactly......good reply.

Here in Canada but I guess it's the same there the only agencies authorized to get your SSN are: govt., electricity company and your bank. That's it.
