Dear EliteFitness,

I know a lot of you guys brag about tipping your servers and the percentage you tip. I just wondered why?? I have a couple friends that work at Fridays, AppleBees, Chilies and you would be suprised what they make per hour on average. While their hour rates are around 3.00 per hour, with others tipping (the foolish few) they end up getting around 10.00 per hour. If somehow no one tips them, the government will pay the remaining 3.00 to make sure they end up getting minium wage at the very end. <-- Which to be quite frank is what they deserve for bringing me food and filling up my coca-cola!

Who here is with me. Lets start a grass roots effort to not tip!!

I swear EF should somehow filter out the idiots from this site, but then that would only leave a few people left to post!

$10 per hour? that is hardly a livable wage.. and servers have to put up with a lot of bullshit from people.

I made a thread about this a long time ago. Now, I enjoy tipping. I tip based on merit, but I always tip something regardless. But here's my take:

Tippers are basically paying an employee's wages so that the owner does not have to. It's ludicrous. It makes no sense. Why are certained people deemed worthy of tipping and others aren't? There is NO logic behind it. And DO NOT tell me ANYTHING about people having to "deal with a lot of shit", cause that describes the entire customer service industry and basically any human interaction whatsoever. Tipping should be used as an extra show of gratitude, not as a replacement for wages.

If the tip was built in to the menu price, then the menu price would be higher for the consumer. The business is going to make the same margins, tips or no tips, so its just a matter of how its paid. Ultimately ALL of the servers wages, tips and non tips, are paid by the PATRONS of the establishment.

I think it would be better to just build it in to menu prices and raise wages, eliminate tipping except for EXCEPTIONAL above and beyond services that you wouldn't normally expect.
