I had a humbling experience tonight

I was at work,it was a pretty easy night for the most part, had a little bit of trouble, some low lifes were smoking crack in the washroom, and I could smell it so I went in to confront them, alone since Im the only one working wed night, and these guys start teaking,so Im thinking of isnt the just great Im gonna get stabbed or some shit, luckily a regular comes in and made sure things were alright, this guy is huge, picture the iraqi guy who was using a sleghammer on the saddam statue, that damn big, anyway we get these guys out,and this guy says in a broken iraqi accent I help you because your good man,I can tell by how you walk and talk.

I felt really good about that,so we sit down for a quick chat since it was a slow night, turns out before he came over to canada he lived in Iraq and was in the army, somewhere alone the line he was put in a iraqi prison, still has that tattoo on his forearm from it,he also showed me the scars on his back from various torture methods.

my respect for this man grew tremendously after learning this and the fact that he respected me enough to help me out in a pinch when we have hardly talked at all. respect from a man who has been through those kind of things means alot imo and I just thought id share it with you all

I feel ya bro...I would be humbled and honored at the same time.

Great story OAK!

I was sitting in a restaurant one day and saw this "old" scrubby guy sitting on a bus bench.
He has a shopping cart sitting beside him with some groceries in it.
He seemed like he was waiting on a bus. But the bus finally came by and he didn't get on.
He laid down on the bench and seems very tired.
I was getting ready to leave and felt sorry for him. So I went over and ask him if I could help him in any way.
He said no.. But I wanted to do something for him. He said he didn't live that far.
So I took him home.
He turned out to be a very interesting old guy. He helped build the Hover Dam!

You never know who your going to meet unless you open yourself up to the opportunity.

Don't tell PW.

Very cool he did that for you. I have been alone in similar situations.
Buy him a drink or 10 when he comes back, and tell him he has more than just your respect.

I definatly owe him a drink at the very least,he could have potentially saved my life, crack fiends around here are very violent and usually carry blades and have no problem using them.

Pamela, thats great, good to see others still helping out when they can.most people would have thought he was homeless and kept on going.

Thanks OAK!
I'm so glad I went over to him! ;)

Buy that guy a drink. He sounds like he could be a good friend.

I hope so,he is about my grandfathers age so Im sure he is full of things I could learn, and vice versa as we are from two very different back grounds

Older people are very interesting if you take the time to listen to them.

He sounds like a very cool person, learn what you can Oak.

The strangest people often have the most to teach.

Where the hell do you work with cracks heads around?

Wow.

People in some of those war-torn countries have seen stuff that makes our everyday problems and drama seem like disneyland.

When I was deployed to Bosnia I saw things that you could only imagine...

Mostly I felt bad for the children who had to grow up learning what it means to protect themselves from mortars and crossfire, death, depraved social conditions and hopelessness. We were told never to give them our MRE rations, but I always did...

You will never understand how good we have it in America until you've lived in and experienced a 3rd world country.

nj-people immigrate here, somewhere around 375k a year I believe, without all the immigration our country could non substain itself in the long run

mountain-I work in a bar right down town,so they wonder in sometimes and pretend to be customers then use our facilites for drug related purposes,Ive caught people shooting up before, which is a scary situation, you just how to god they dont try and stick you

Oak that's awesome, I met some really cool people when I was a bouncer. One night I tossed a guy through the back door (literally) and this huge guy probably 6'6" and as big build wise as me comes walking up. He shifts a couple of drinks around in his hand looks down at me and says "I want to shake your hand that was the coolest thing I have ever seen" felt pretty good. I also befriended and old Native American guy who has an interesting life. He once took some Tibetan monks on a tour of the southwest and some other stuff like that. He also gave me some hand made stone pieces that I have in my apartment.

Anyway buy him a drink and listen to some stories.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Small gestures can go a long way. Everyone should keep it in mind when such an oppurtunity presents itself.

K to you, oak.

There's a guy who runs a Yellow Cab company in Kamloops, British Columbia. This guy is one of the men MOST responsible for getting the Mujahadeen up to a level where they could combat the Russians in Afghanistan. The guy was one of the biggest players in the Middle East and had an incredible network.

He got out, came to Canada, and now runs a Cab company despite turning away CIA, NSA, CSIS people once a week who want to pick his brain.

Guy could probably kill you with one of his pubic hairs.
