I feel super manly right now

I just changed the engine oil, oil filter, transmision fluid, transmision filter and oxygen sensors on my car. Got dirty as fuck but it gives me a feeling of satisfaction and extreme manliness to have done it by the wrench and not the credit card.

here's the real test...what kind of car was it?

yeah thats always a good feeling

Damn!!!! I was about to go to the store and pick some beer, I get to my car and see a puddle of oil on the floor, checked the dip stick, dry as my sex life! I either didn't tighten the oil filter or drain plug enough. I'll check it tomorrow.

You'll really feel like a man after you do mine (just make sure and tighten the cap)

in other words, your car needed maintenance and you're broke?

I checked the source of the leak this morning and found that it was the transmision and not the engine oil. I put more fluid in so that I could watch it leak and see exactly where it was leaking from. I then further tightened the bolts in the area of the pan where the leak was coming from. I fucking snapped one of the bolts off!!!!!!! All mechinics are closed on Sunday so now I gotta wait until tomorrow to take it somewhere and get that bolt hole tapped and rethreaded. Shit!!!!

I still feel super manly though, the hair on my chest is off the hook right now.

ouch.

how much of the bolt snapped off? meaning, if you were to fully remove the trans pan, would you be able to work it out with a pair of vice grips or needle nose pliers or something?

OR, depending on the size of the bolt, you could go to the hardware store and pick up an "EZ Out" set. how it works...you drill into the bolt, then pull the drill bit out. then you take one of the screw in extractors. as you're screwing in the extractor, the bolt will start coming out.

there's other sets where you drill in, then hammer in a spline piece, slide a nut over the spline, and wrench it out.

you have options other than taking it to the shop. thought i'd try to help you out and make you aware of this so your chest hair doesn't fall off.

The entire head and some of the stem snapped off. I don't want to do it myself because the jack that I'm using doesn't lift the car enough to give me the room do try it. I'm just gonna take it to a local mechanic that I have used in the past. I'll have him change the differential oil while he's at it. I hope it doesn't cost too much though.

nah, they'll probably have the bolt out in 10 minutes including removing the pan, if they even bother to remove the pan. depends on how smart the guy doing it is really.

provided they get it out smoothly, they won't even have to re-tap the hole. i did enough of this shit in the Marine Corps where we had to pretty much work with what we had.

the worst was bolting up the engine to the trans. trans was aluminum and those holes got stripped out so damn easy it wasn't even funny. there were 22 bolts holding the engine to the trans and each one was only supposed to be tightened to 23 lb ft. seemed kinda scary when you figured the engine was a 903 cu in Cummins Turbo Diesel. engine only made about 450hp but well over 1000 lbs of torque and was in a 26 ton vehicle.

Good job man. I remember when I used to work on my first car.. 86 Ford F150 4x4.. it felt cool to be able to go to Kragen, buy an alternator, then go in and switch that bithc out myself.

Now I roll japanese cars... good gas mileage, but I can't work on them for shit.

yeah, f'ing small cars anymore...i need ramps just to do an oil change on our Civics. my 85 civic and 82 Prelude i could do the oil changes with the cars still on the ground. went to check out an exhaust leak on her Civic yesterday and needed ramps just to get under the damn car.

they handle good and get good milage though, so i guess it's a trade off.

I called my cousin, who works as a mechanic for a local dealer ship, to help me out. When we took the pan off, he noticed that it was warped on one side, most likely where I used a screw driver to pry it off. He straightened it out, put a new gasket with sealant, even left the broken bolt off, and so far it looks like it's all good. Drove it around for a good 20 mins and no leakage and fluid levels OK.

try doing this crap everyday for a living the manly feeling wears off real quick lol

buddy of mine is always bitching to his gf about work. he's only been doing it for 10 years or so.

he's the top guy in their shop though, and as soon as they won't beat out offers he gets from Dealerships, he'll move on. $60K+ a year isn't too bad for wrenching though. i think the money is the only thing keeping him in that line of work (and that's all he knows).
