Well, no disagreement with you there, NY. The main problem, as i see it, is that people who stay safe in other parts of their lives get careless when it comes to communicating via Internet. And even if one takes the time to learn how to use good encryption, there is the issue of the other person.
Studious people can secure their communications seriously, but it's a long discussion. You either have a recipient who knows, or one who doesn't. Most don't.
For those who don't, I stick with Hush and all its weirdness, or I just mail them a list of passwords and use a strong self-decrypting private key program or multiple programs. Sure, everybody knows there is an encrypted message there in the attachment, but it's an issue of priorities and computational feasibility.
And there's even steganography, embedding encrypted messages inside .bmp or MP3 files, but these days it sort of raises a "terrorism" flag. Not good, because the feds can flag a steg encoded message.
