Why is my new mail open before I open them . I just had some one send me a email and waited 5 minutes before login on to hush and the email was unopened , but when I recieve mail while I'm away for a while its always open . How secure is hushmail really !!

The same thing has happened to me also. I've heard other things about hush that has made me stop using it.

Secret Builder

Is SECRET BUILDER so secret that you couldn't just elaborate on it a little bit more?

Thanks, NYStrip. I checked it out. I think I'll pass.

I've gone through dozens of public and privite key programs of various sorts...and at the end of the day it gets down to the same thing: The security - functionality tradeoff.

Most people just can't deal with, or don't want to be troubled with, public-key/private key schemes unless they offer the kind of friendliness like Hush (or one Hush's private versions such as EliteFitness) or even ZipLip.

Hush is a good approach, but it's clunky and chewed my account up when they upgraded. Also, you can't send secure messages to anyone other than other hush/elite users. Ziplip encryption is not functional IMO, because you have to pass around a private key. Also, ziplip encryption is weak. What's most important is that you need some insurance that the federales won't pressure hush into providing some sort of back-door access. With an off-line encryption system, this is a non-issue. For anyone who wants to really be safe, something like PGP or Secret Builder is inevitable.

Well, no disagreement with you there, NY. The main problem, as i see it, is that people who stay safe in other parts of their lives get careless when it comes to communicating via Internet. And even if one takes the time to learn how to use good encryption, there is the issue of the other person.

Studious people can secure their communications seriously, but it's a long discussion. You either have a recipient who knows, or one who doesn't. Most don't.

For those who don't, I stick with Hush and all its weirdness, or I just mail them a list of passwords and use a strong self-decrypting private key program or multiple programs. Sure, everybody knows there is an encrypted message there in the attachment, but it's an issue of priorities and computational feasibility.

And there's even steganography, embedding encrypted messages inside .bmp or MP3 files, but these days it sort of raises a "terrorism" flag. Not good, because the feds can flag a steg encoded message.
