This is not me asking..but something that made me think when I read it and wanted some Veteran feedback.
HTPA recovery after steroids?
by speters415 (WebMD) 8/28/01 6:17 p.m.
I am trying to find some actual studies that have been done on the effects of different type of steroids and the effect on the bodies natural production of testosterone. I know that most will stop the natural production, but what determines this, and to what extent is it shut down.? I am sure that the dosage is one factor, also the amount of time on. Gut what about androgens compared to anabolics. I see that most doctors will prescibe anavar to patience in dosages around 10-20mg daily for long periods of time, and it does not seem to effect the bodies natural production of test. But it a weel known fact that if you do 250mg/wk of testosterone cypiante, that you should only do it for about 8 wks, and then you need to stop it for at least 8 wks to let your HTPA get back on line. The reason you then lose all of the muscle you put on is because you have know test in your body and the cortisol level (which have been sepressed) I going to be going through the foor. This is where it gets confusing and I see so much conflicting reports from bodybuilders. Some say the you should not taper down, because your body onl naturally produces somewhere between 6-10mg test/day, so anything over that you are still going to be shut down. Some say that by slowly tapering down that your HTPA will slowly start to come back on line. So which is true? Then there is also the issue of clomid (clomidphene citrate), which bodybuilder will take at the end of a cycle because it causes an elevation of FSH and LH, which will cause natural testosterone production to increase. Now all bodybuilders agree that this is needed to help maintain gains, but I then read an article that states "Clomid, particularly at those high dosages, will increase natural test levels. But notice in this study that their were no increases in LH or FSH. That is because Clomid attenuates pituitary and hypothalamic function!Thats right - clomid ultimately delays the recovery of natural test production in healthy males. As long as the body sees the clomid floating around it assumes there is more than enough LH from the pituitary gland and enough GnRHfrom the hypothalamus - so those glands stay turned "off" until the clomid goes away. After the patient discontinues clomid use, he will have to start from the beginning physiologically in waiting for the return of natural test levels again. So if some one in the medical feild could help me figure this out I would greatly appreciate it
