How to fix US prisons...

I thought this was going to be a serious thread, and had my response geared accordingly.

Don't want to waste the thought, so here's my idea fixing the cost-related problems in the US prison system.

1. Give every person in prison for posession of marijuana a chance to be released instantly upon payment of a fine.

2. Decriminalize posession of marijuana. Make it a fine only, much like a speeding ticket. Use the money generated from posession of marijuana fines to help fund the prison system.

That alone would make a big difference, when you factor in the lower number of inmates and the revenue generated by fines.

How big a percentage is pot users? In grand scheme of billions spent it is probably not that much. Less expensive meals and things like that would have a greater effect.

MJ forever! hehehe!

Legalize pot and tax it. Release dopers. limit number of appeals for deathrow inmates. These people that have been wrongly accused and had cases overturned because of improved dna methods also means that the new murders are pretty much 100% guilty due to the same said new and improved dna methods.

Bring back hard labor. Chain gangs and so on.

Prison is almost like its own seperate society. Make it so horrible that these wannabee gangstas dont want to go there. Its almost to the point of being glamorized now.

When was the last time we put someone in PRISON for marijuana possessoin? 1988?

If you're talking the guys who smuggle marijuana, have big grow ops, use violence to keep their territory - think after it's legal and their revenue stream goes away they'll just go get a job at mcdonalds???

No. They'll smuggle something else illegal, import more cocaine, rob more liquor stores, whatever. To make up for that money lost. Legalizing ain't gonna do shit to make your 'streets safer'. In fact, it'll be the opposite. Gangs will try now to get kids hooked on meth or cocaine instead, which they can still sell.

People think this issue is so simple. Who here has met a mexican marijuana drug cartel smugger? Raise your hands.

lets release the physically violent, after all, the victim probably had it coming... give them all the MJ and let them relax...

point being.. doing something that is illegal is punishable, beating women and gays was not illegal that long ago..

by the way, I support penal colonies, let them grow their own food..

Hand raised!

That smugger was warm and cuddly.

However, I've never met a drug smuggler.
