How old were you when

VooDoo Lady

you were allowed to go outside by yourself? If you have kids how old were they before they could go outside by themselves?

It depends on where you live and such, but when I was in Kindergarten I was pretty much out and about doing my own thing. My neighborhood was pretty safe though.

When I was young i played in the back yard, there was room and swings for me to play with. Now-a-days kids play in the front yard and street. Why? they're 5 years old in the front yard. There's nothing in the the front yard buy a driveway and mail box.

So, anyways, I must of been 8 or 9 when I started walking home from school. Is that what you mean?

when i was 4 years old, i used to get up at around 6am, and go swimming in our pool.....until one of my nosey neighbors ratted me out to my parents.

and i used to dig holes all over the back yard when i was really young....that sure pissed my parents off.
hehe, I used to think I big hole was so much fun!

I live in a rural neighborhood with very little traffic....about 1.5 acres of land around my house. My son is 6 and my husband allows him to be outside by himself...I'm not entirely comfortable with it...but I'm a little on the over protective side. I thought I'd ask around and see what other people thought. All the other kids in the neighborhood are either a lot older or younger than my son...

There were 4 or 5 of us in our kindergarten car pool, one of the moms forgot it was her turn to pick us up one day so we all walked home in a group. I would guess it was around one mile and had one busy street to cross. When we showed up at the first house, the mom totally freaked out and drove the rest of us home.

If that happened today, someone at the school would be fired for letting a bunch of 5 year olds walk off, and the mom would be in jail ;)

I wouldn't feel comfortable at 6.
But I would be on the protective side too.

But you never know these days what's going to happen.

Yeah.....I can remember playing outside in the back yard even before I started pre-K. My mom could see everything from the kitchen window though and I usually stayed in the sandbox
(bit of a digger myself:D )

Mom would usually check on me pretty often though.
But I liked to hang around with her and my dad alot though when I was little. My mom didnt work until I was about 9 so she was always available. I had something new I wanted to learn about every hour. Luckily she had the time to teach me.
Guess that may explain her being an Algebra teacher.

2 for short periods of time! By 4 I was raising hell! For Real! Check out Rangers Thread on old school kids, for more Dcup childhood fun!

Around 6 , my dad's was in the country, I remember at 7 riding my banana seat bike thru traffic, lol that was at my mom's.

i was 7 (i think). nowadays, i wouldn't let my child outside alone at that age unless he (or she) was packing some heat j/k. on a serious note, their independence would depend greatly on their maturity and degree of common sense.

but you live in canada....canada has no crime. everyone is one big happy family, and no one feels the need to lock their doors.

or so a documentary, by a communist fuck, told me.

Outside by myself? Five at the latest..but if you mean go to stores without my parents, then probably 9 or 10 with my cousins.

trust me, canada has it's own share of murderers, rapists, gangs etc as well as a pretty lenient justice system. for example, under the new "young offenders act", they discourage arresting so-called "young offenders" (<18 yoa) and prosecuting them, instead, the police give them some sort of warning and let them go, even for crimes like car theft. what kind of shit is that? it's like vigilante justice is trying to be encouraged.

the local papers always publish the pictures of newly-released pedophiles though, so i guess that's some comfort.

btw, i ALWAYS lock my doors.

I use to play in my grandparents backyard at 3 in toronto, but that all stopped when some crazy fuck tried to kidnap me in a supermarket when I was 4,after that maybe a yr later we moved to my grandpa's farm and lived there,I did whatever I wanted nobody around

I think I was about 6 years old when I could go around our neighborhood on my own, but everyone knew everyone else in the neighborhood back then and more parents were home. It was safer back then.

Now I get nervous when my almost-12 year old wants to go to the movies with her friends and when my 8yo wants to go outside to bike ride. Even if we live in suburbia I don't trust anyone... and I watch them and the neighborhood kids like a hawk. :)

This thread just gave me a flashback to when my daughter was just an innocent tiny little girl. Excuse me, I have to go cry now.

I would go outside and play with the kids around the neighborhood unsupervised when I was (I believe) about 6 years old. They were between 2 and 6 years older than me.

I live in a safe neighborhood. Only time my safety was compromised was when this retarded kid thrice my size and almost twice my age attacked me. The bigger kids gave him a few swift kicks to the ribs and saved me. yay me.

I let my son go outside by himself (front yard where I can see him) right before he turned 3, because we bought him a John Deer Gator Power Wheels. But we lived on a military base (gated) and we had a huge yard which was set back off the street. Here in Florida I let him go outside but I watch him becuase I don't want some wierdo to snatch him and run off.
