How often to take asprin

I know doctors say to take asprin to help promote a healthy heart but how often and how much? Anybody know? If you do, please inform. Cheers.

The dosage needed to get the anti-aggregation effect on the platlets is 80 mg daily; depending on your doctor, that can vary.

Acetylsalicylic acid is a fantastic drug, and very safe, but before you start taking it daily, make sure you talk to your doctor.

it has an anti-platlet aggr. action as said, but why do you feel you have the need to take it? Its to reduce the risk of thromboembolism

80mg, really?

i always thought it was in the range between 20-40mg

as already mentioned - it reduces the risk of thromboembolism

which means, generally speaking, that it inhibits the clotting-ability of the thrombocytes, therefore the possibility that a bloodclot in some of your bloodvessels will build up and then be washed through your body until it blocks some vessel somewhere is reduced

promote a healthy heart? from the top of my head i could imagine that it reduces the risk of a bloodclot forming on the ground of an atherosclerotic lesion, other than that,...

i'm no big fan of ASA and i wouldn't take it daily if it hasn't been prescribed to me because of a reason

interesting fact: everytime you take ASA you'll have a mico-bleeding in your stomach (because of the chemical principle called 'ion trapping') (as far as i know ASA is one of the main reasons for gastro-intestinal bleedings _and_ ulcera)

i'm sorry for my inability to express myself correctly on medical terms - it's hard to transfer it from german to english

baby aspirin which is 81mg/day. Taken mainly by patients with cardiovascular history of some kind and irregular heart beats like atrial fibrillation thats intermittent, if its chronic they use warfarin/coumadin, but thats beside the point.
What is the reason you are taking it? Itd be alot easier to give advice that way.

I take 81 mg/ed for the last few years, just for general cardiovascular health & to lower BP. It has never caused a problem except when I had dental surgery... bled like a mother. They had a problem with me bleeding & said I should have told them that I take aspirin. I really didn't think 81 mg/ed would change my platlet aggregation that much, but it did.

Aspirin in a simple sense makes blood cells "slippery". When a person has a plaque rupture in a coronary artery, the body sends clotting factors b/c it doesnt know the difference between a plaque rupture or a scrape in the skin. Either way it sends stuff to make a clot. If that happens in a coronary artery thats a heart attack as blood flow to cardiac muscle is prevented. It saves lives to take an aspirin in a heart attack situation, thats why its one of the first thing given in the ER when someone is having chest pain. To prevent platelet aggregation, its properties are immensely important in those situations.
