How often should you run your computer's Disk Defragmenter utility?

set it up to do it on its own, and specify a time that you are not on the computer so its no hassle or interruption. peace

I defrag everyday.

I want the utmost performance out of my pc.

I also load and unload programs on my comp on a daily basis.

If all you are doing is surfing the net, once a week should more than suffice.

It depends on how often you install/delete items, but once a month is good enough, or even longer than that.

If you have Win98 etc, look at the Task Scheduler in the bottom right of your SysTray, and go through the wizard. You have to have the computer on during the times you schedule it however, so I prefer to just do it manually whenever I get the inclination.

Scan disk once every two weeks.

Defrag when you hit 10% scattered clusters

WTF are "scattered clusters"? Damn, this is getting really complicated.....

hey assplorer - is this why you computer was running really slowly?

if you do a lot file swapping (which includes downloading porn movies off of the net, watching them, and then throwing them out), then that will defrag your disk quickly.

and for those that say it is overrated - you are dead on. it is overrated if all you do is open email, web pages, and a word document, and then turn your computer off.
but if you do anything at all that is multimedia or games, which many people do these days - then you really do need to do it.
I sadly lost a hard drive one day due to it.
the more fragmented it is, the further the drive head has to move in order to get different parts of a file.
a drive only goes so far in its life, so making it go further is bad.

depending on how much fragmenting you do, then you should do it more frequently.

<quitely starts running norton speed disk>

Yea my girlfriends dad couldn't figure out for the life of him why his computer was running so slow. I went over only to find that he hasn't ran his defrag in over 500 days:)

It can help alot yes, but in some cases its is "overrated" where people tell you defrag fixes all your problems, most people have not a f'ing clue what it is and thats when you find a slow ass HDD.
