how important is sleep

I know this is probably a dumb post but i want to get you guys and gals reply on this one. I am a paramedic student so I dont get very much sleep my sleep cycle is all screwed up when i do sleep i get any where between 8 and 12 hours but when i dont sleep im up for 12 to 24 hours straight doing clinicals, studing, working on the ambulance and trying to workout so what can i do? During the week i have the motivation to workout but on the weekends i have no motivation. What can i do to help grow since I dont sleep like I should. I cant quit my job because I enjoy what I do so very much, but the lack of sleep is the only thing I dont enjoy. Any suggestions
 
take a month or two and get some regular sleep, you will get ridiculous gains. sleep deprivation can hinder your gains very badly. i have the same problem and i have the same problem with gains. last night i went to bed at 2a.m and woke up at 5.30, 3 hours is definately not helping my body recover or build new muscle tissue. id say in most important to least important order it would go like this:

sleep, diet, training, supplements/roids

I average about 7hrs a night. I wish I could find time to nap, I don't know how some guys have time to. When I do get lots of sleep I wake up feeling heavier & have a shit load of energy.
 
Man, sleep is one of the most important aspects of muscle building! This is when all the repairing of muscle tissue takes place! I don't know what to tell you about your job, but no matter how much juice you do or how much you eat, your body will never reach it's full potential without the sleep and rest your body needs after a workout. It's like the old saying, you don't grow in the gym, you grow when you sleep.
If you got no choice, then you should train less, but with more intensity.
 
tigerparks said it the best, "you dont grow at the gym" if i was you id try to cut something out of your life. thats if you plan on being serious about your training. think about it, i know its a big decision to make
