How do you get a lawyer

Lao Tzu

New member
I dont need one right now but lets assume something happens to me (this is based on Razorguns post about a corrupt repo dealership). how do i go about getting a lawyer quickly? Is it as easy as just calling in the yellow pages? Do they really charge $300 an hour? What is a 'contingency'? Is a general lawyer good at all forms of law or do you need specialist lawyers (like in medicine, a general practitioner vs. a cardiovasular surgeon)?

With a board full of body building bad ass law breakin' sums a bytches,
you'd figure there'd be a few chat posers that know...I mean chat posters that would know. (Ooops! Talk about a Freudean slip :mix: )

guy i knew used to have his own motorcycle repair shop. what he did was found a firm with business lawyers and he paid them a certain amount of money per week or month or whatever. everything he paid into them was just accumulating in case he ever needed them, kind of like an investment. he had a few hundred hours of lawyers fees pre-paid.

you'd have to check it out for yourself with lawyers in your area to see if any would do a personal arrangement like that for you. wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea if you could spare the cash. kind of like an insurance policy i guess.

the dude in that story must've had a similar arrangement. either that or he had a lawyer that was a good friend and willing to help out.

you can get a lawyer kind of quickly if need be, but i would expect it to be 24-48 hours.

there's many types of lawyers, just like doctors. all have the same basic schooling behind them, and there are certain areas they can go back to school for to become specialized. i don't know what those areas are offhand. i think once they get done law school, however, they get hired by a firm that practices a certain type of law and that's what they get good at. there are, however, lawyers out there that are more or less a jack of all trades, i believe mostly private attorneys, not ones that work in firms.

hope that helps a little bit. get back to me in about 2 1/2 years when i'm getting ready to start law school. if i can't help then, wait about 2 more years or so when i'm getting ready for bar exams. then i could probably answer more questions for you.

and my fee will be established by current rates. you will be billed for this response accordingly.

A good lawyer can afford to write hundreds of dollars an hour for his service, some even thousands.
Sometimes it's all bluff though.

In cases civil cases if you are the one suing and there is a good chance you will be awarded money they will take the case with no money up front and just get paid when you do. I sued a night club I got jumped in and got $5,000. My lawyer go $1,000 of it after I signed a settlement. My step father found him in the yellow pages.

Otherwise you have to pay a retainer fee and more on top of that if you go to trial.

Find one that you like, and then pay the retainer. Then, whenever you need him, he will bill you per hour...

most people do call in the yellow pages actually.

Fees are rarely that high - for small cases, they will do it on a flat fee basis. Hourly could be $150 or so, only the top dogs can charge $300+.

Contingency means they talke a % of any settlement as payment.

There are specialists; don;t ask a securities lawyer to defend you in a manslaughter case.
