If you're using Windows XP, you can't uninstall it. You can disable it in the prefs, or you can rename the executable.

If you open MSN Messenger, go to Tools, then Options, then the General tab, you can uncheck the Run Messenger when Windows Starts box.

You can also rename msmsgs.exe to whatever you want. I'd suggest chopping off the .exe, and changing it to .bak.

BTW, you have to close it before you can rename it.

This will remove it:

1. Click on the Start button and select Run.
2. Type "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove" in the text box and click OK. You will see a progress bar appear shortly as it deletes its files and it will then ask you to reboot. After the reboot the program will be gone.

Thanks a lot. I always hated the way MSN messenger started up when I used Outlook. I never use the damn thing. The online instant messenger I use it yahoo because the webcam and trillian because it connects to yahoo, aim/aol, MSN, ICQ and IRC all at once.

Wow...had no idea that was there.

Where'd you find this?

Are you talking about windows messenger or MSN? Both are entirely different things.

Windows messenger is there to send error reports to Microsoft in XP. People (advertisers) found out that through this connection they can send you spam-mail any time your computer is on.

I had pop-ups during on-line games, which ended up freezing my game and me being unable to play till I got rid of the pop-up.

There is shit all over the net with people bitching about windows messenger and MANY different ways of dealing with it.

MSN is just chat bs.

Spy-ware sucks monkey balls.

PS: To find the solution to ANY computer problems. Type your specific problem into a search engine (ie:google) and undoubtedly you will find the solution.

Perhaps, but I haven't been "dethroned" as the resident spelling/grammar geek.

Give me a break..the "w" and "n" are pretty close to one another on the keyboard. I just hit it on accident.
