I'm watching a movie or show and my son or daughter wants a snack. They are 3 so no I'm not going to let them get in the fridge. I pause the show, go get them something and I don't miss anything.
I'm watching a game and I see a killer hit. I will rerun that puppy a good five times just for fun. Again I can pause it, record it, come back and finish watching. It adds flexibility to my schedule.
Network shows.
I Record a few of those and with the dvr I can ff through the commercials. I can cut an hour long show run down to about 42 minutes.
You need a DVR to do so.... it's nice to pause when you need to get up & get something or whatever & don't want to miss something.....also if you want to replay that big play or pause it to see if he dropped the ball....
Yep, and if you let the show play for 10 - 15 mins but dont' watch it, come in the room & rewind it to the beginning, then you can watch the whole show with no commercials...

Are you asking how it works? The DVR is always recording what you are watching. Therefore, when you want a replay, you are simply rewinding what has already been recorded. I have Replay TV with commercial skip. It's awesome. You can record your shows and play them back with the commercials skipped automatically. Too bad they got sued by TV networks and they can't make them with the commercial skip anymore. I love my Replay TV. It's so much better than a VCR.
my point is, say your watching a dvd, you pause it, when you hit play again it plays where it left off, if your watching live t.v., and you pause it you cant start where you left off and it still be live.

You can always go back to "live" or just play from where you left off, then when the commercial comes, just FF thru the commercial..... So while "technically" it's not live, as you're about a few secs or mins behind the actually "live" show, you are still watching everything that was shown live....
The DVR is constantly recording the show, so it's recording everything shown "live" -- and you can either continue where you paused & left off or hit the "live" button on your remote & go back to live (which will then skip the show from when you paused it to when you went back to live again)
As long as you leave the TV on the same channel, the video & audio is still being recorded by the DVR's hard drive, it will store as much video as its capacity....As long as you don't change the channel or don't run out of allocated space, you'll be fine.....
Then there's a dual tuner DVR that allows you to record 2 shows on 2 diff. channels at the same time.......more advanced feature...
