Honorary Deaths

Roman Soldiers when executed would ask for a soldiers death which was a blade plunged downward through their chests. A dishonorable soldiers death was one where the blade was plunged through the back.

Under Khan the idea of a noble death was to die without spilling blood, which is granted by breaking the back. Although some leaders offered enemy soldiers a noble death (as opposed to execution - meaning blood was spilled) and when accepted had the soldiers boiled alive.

interesting shit. got any more?

Oh and... are you sure that is "honorary" and not "honorable"? Honorary just seems like we all say he's dead when we know damned well he's not.

*scratches head*

Huh?

For a viking male the only honorable death was in combat. Death from illness or old age was considered the worst fate imaginable.

Cheers,

The Japanese warriors found it honorable to off themselves (Seppuku):

"Seppuku was considered a privilege for samurai and the nobility. Feudal Japanese history is full of cases of defeated enemies, who were 'forced' by their conquerors to commit suicide. This was considered as a grace. The looser received a chance to keep his honor.

If the circumstances allowed it, the ritual suicide was executed in a formal, procedural manner. Even spectators were not uncommon. The suicide candidate was clad in a white kimono. Before the final act, he was expected to write his death poem, formerly a practice common for the higher social classes. "
