Holyfield fight tonight

biteme

EF VIP
Boxing fans, don't forget Evander "the warrior" Holyfield fights Chris Byrd for the IBF heavyweight championship tonight on HBO. Holyfield is now 40 years old and can still slug with the best of them. I love to watch him because he is the toughest mofo and most determined I have ever seen. Even though this is a watered down title, it would be his 5th heavyweight championship. What's so impressive is that he is not a true heavyweight, he has to work like hell to keep that extra weight on, yet he has never dodged anyone. A true badass, I have his poster on my wall. I admire his type.

holyfield always has and always will be a bad boxer.

jk. i just wanted to rile you up since i saw your other thread about having a bad day.

Well I wouldn't go that far. Age catches up with us all. He'll push it to the limit though. There is noone any tougher or more determined. What a great champion he has been.

i know...i was just joking. i edited my original post but you must not have seen it.

LOL. By bad I thought you meant good. My bad.

I respect Evander's determination & work ethic. He's easily one of the Top 20 heavyweights of all-time.

But still, he's a notoriously dirty fighter. Go back and watch Tyson/Holyfield 2. He deserved to get bitten. Mike Tyson is actually regarded as a historically clean fighter. Holyfield was butting him repeatedly, cut his eye, and all the referee (Evander's real life personal friend, Mills Lane) did was say "you know better than that" to him. Should Mike have retaliated with a bite? It wasnt wise, but EH did deserve it. Typically, if someone is fighting dirty & is not getting called in it, the other boxer will go foul-for-foul until the ref steps in or starts doing his job. The only foul I've seen Mike ever do really is letting his arm "slip up" and rock the person in the chin when they locked up. He couldnt do this with Holyfield b/c of the way he fights, so he snapped.

Anyway, I hope Holyfield waxes Byrd. What are the vegas odds?

Yup. He has been notorious for head butts. Rahman was even complaining about the butting when he fought him a few months ago

Byrd is favored. I think slightly. He is a very good defensive fighter. About the head butting. I don't know if it was on purpose. Sometimes the styles of the fighters cause head clashes. Tyson is always moving forward and holyfield will not move back like a lot of other fighter's because he is not scared. Tyson throws a punch, his bodyweight behind the punch carries him forward, Evander ducks down as Tyson moves forward and you have a head clash. It may be on purpose, but is so, it's very crafty.

The warrior still has the heart, but at 40 he no longer has the skills. He came close to knocking Byrd out a few times, but he was soundly beaten in the fight although he was never hurt. Time for the great one to step down, but he said he will not until he becomes the undisputed heavyweight champ or until someone beats him up. Have to admire his spirit.

yea Byrd picked him apart. I thought Byrd was gonna go down in the last couple rounds but it didn't happen. I don't think either would stand a chance against Lewis though. I can't stand Lewis but it's pretty obvious that niether of these guys would stand a chance against such a huge competitor. Now Klitscho(sp?) is another story. Either of them for that matter

You think they would stand a chance against Klitchko?
Byrd got his ass handed to him by Wladimir. Lost 11 of the 12 rounds and was nearly knocked out. The jury's still out on the Klitchko brother's though. I don't think they've been tested yet. Vitali also fought Byrd and was beating his ass when he quit in the 11th round because of a suspect shoulder injury. Byrd had just caught him with some clean shots and looked like he hurt him. They seem to be very good technical fighters to me, but not very explosive or quick. I don't know. Time will tell how good they are. Neither has been hit that hard so we don't know how well they can take a punch. Remember everyone thought Golotta was going to be the next champ, but when he got behind or hit hard, he folded.

Sorry I worded it wrong. I meant to write that I the Klitchko brothers would give Lewis one hell of a fight not Byrd or Holyfield. So what do you think about the Jones Ruiz fight that's coming in march?

Very interesting fight. I have no idea who will win. I'm gonna go with Jones. I don't think Ruiz is a very strong man for a decent size heavyweight and he's not that much taller than Jones. They are both cautious fighters so it could be a boring fight.
Roy is so good and so much faster than any heavyweight. He does have very good power contrary to what some people think.

Yea but compared to someone that is a good 20-30 ppounds his weight? Jones is gonna have to sacrifice some of his quickness to bulk like holyfield did to become a heavyweight. If Jones can hold onto his speed with his quickness, he'll be the greatest boxer in history. Peroid. But that a big accomplishment

He's a good 50 pounds heavier than Roy. But I wonder if the weight factor is not overrated. Many times I have seen the analysts talk about a guy having a big weight advantage and he still got his ass kicked. Tyson was at his best and almost unbeatable at 216 lbs. How come guys that weigh 280 couldn't kick his ass? That's over 60 lbs. Now they are talking about creating a new division for these new huge heavyweights like Klitschko. I don't think it's necessary. We get one big champion (Lewis) and now many people think all we're ever gonna see from now on are huge champions. I don't think so. For the advantage they have in size, they have a disadvantage in speed, footwork, and endurance. In the end, the best fighter will emerge the champion regardless of whether he is 5'10" 215 or 6'7" 260.

I'm not a huge boxing follower so excuse my stupidity but has Lewis fought Wladimir Klitschko yet. I saw him on HBO or Showtime once and he looked diesel.

No, He was scheduled to fight Vitaly Klitschko(Wladimer's brother) in March. But Lewis has not fully committed to the fight yet. He's holding out for more money, I think. Don King is involved if that tells you anything.

I think a R. Jones/Byrd fight would be interesting.

If WK ever gets in the ring with Lewis, he better fight better than he did against McCline. Yes he knocked him out, but Jameel could have beaten Wladimir had he kept pressure on him. He had his chances to knock him out . JM looked like he was there for a pay day. WK didn't impress me & neither has Byrd.

I'd also love to know what miracle of God Evander thinks will bring him to a position to be undisputed HV champ again.
