Hiv-2

Why in the U.S. Do they only test for the HIV-1 antibodies when you go to a clinic to get tested? I know HIV-2 is predominantly found in West Africa, but how do you know where your past partners have been? I've been tested for HIV 3 times in the past year and I wanted to get an HIV-2 test and the clinic said it is not necessary. I dont understand.

perhaps you could demand this test from your doctor?

There are labratories that test for it here in the U.S., including the one I work for... There are several different types of HIV testing methods inculding the typical HIV 1&2 antibodies test, HIV Western Blot, HIV-1/HCV Nucleic Acid Tests by TMA, HIV by EIA, and a couple others... Some labs will test for HIV 1 and/or 2 using various methods, it is your Doc that has to order the tests though...

I know they test for it, but I want to know why it is not standard procedure to test for both HIV 1 and 2. What lab do you work for? I get my bloodwork done through Quest Diagnostics.

Quest does rather basic testing.... I work for Labratories at Bonfils, in Denver, CO. We do everything from standard ABO blood typing to full out Genetic sequencing.... One of the most common tests we do is the HIV 1&2 antibody test.

For the same reason that they don't test for HIV for marring couples, when thay tried they got so many negative results that the just didn't bother any more. Thanks! Alan Chiras.
