I must admit that this is somewhat a step in the right direction, or more like a diagonal step outward. But a vegetarian diet doesnt necessarily promote healthy eating habits. Some issues I have with this:
1. Just like any typical bureaucracy real issues are avoided... I remember all the vending machines at my high school. I recall it being a subliminal Pepsi and Mountain dew nightmare. Get rid of this.
2. The propensity of high schoolers to eat poorly will always be there. If they have an option of vending machine crap or carrots which do you think they will choose?
3. School lunch guidelines are still based off the food pyramid, and we all know what a travesty that joke of a model diet is. Start offering higher protein, higher fiber choices - and this means chicken salads with real chicken, not some processed crap and either a low carb dressing or low fat.
4. Vegetarianism is an excellent choice for developing bodies...not! It's sad that this is the response to the crap they were serving before. Why not just offer decent protein, fat and carbohydrate sources?
