Hey Hansel

I am not even going to pretend like I know shit about computers. My stepson is huge into video games and has started getting into computer gaming more than with a console. I am open to any suggestions.

I think for it to be able to play some of the games it has to have the windows software, but I could be wrong about that.

I'm a Linux guy and I spec/build machines from desktops to servers. I haven't run Windoze in over 8 years...but I'm not a gamer either. There are a lot of Linux gamers out there that run Windoze "emulators" in order to satisfy their gaming desire(s).

I just can't bring myself to run an OS that requires all this anti-virus/malware/spyware/fuckware in order to safely perform daily routines on one's machine...know what I mean?

Sheez Dave i think u lost all of us.

I'd say that'll run everything you'd want play thats out. Not sure about some stuff like crysis 2 or other high demand graphics but i5 with 1gb Nvidia GeForce is better than most. I think i'd ask for more details on that video card.

Great to hear your kid is into PC gaming. He'll learn a lot about computers if he sticks with it; ideally building his next one after this.

As for the rig you posted, it looks good except for the graphics card, which is weak. Typical for pre-made systems to have a good processor and ample memory, but topped off with a "meh" GPU.

I'd also look at a mid-tower at the very least (more spacious, and that'll be more upgrade-friendly down the line) and any GTX 6 series graphics card from Nvidia, or 6870 or up from ATI/AMD. Reference the chart in the link above for these and choose whichever your budget affords you. He should be set to run everything for a few years then.

A free, unobtrusive antivirus program like Avast or AVG plus a maintenance tool like Advanced System Care or CCleaner is all anyone needs for Windows to keep running smoothly and safely. The key is to avoid the darkside of the interwebs lol. Its been revealed on hardware sites that Windows 7 is more secure than Mac OS's but the difference is the millions of viruses that target Windows and not Macs.

Talked with a buddy if mine who builds them and he wants to custom build one for him. He also said the video card was weak. He has one called a Radeon HD 6790 its water cooled?? that is in a computer rinning 8g ram and 6 expansion ports some other specs I will try to get.

Well my PC has a 6870 and can run everything in high, and that card is a significant jump up from it. Is it made by Sapphire? I like their stuff.

I don't know who makes it but my buddy said that the computer was significantly better than the 1 at tiger direct. it has that water cooled video card 1 terabyte of storage with an additional 5 slots for 5 more terabyte. it has 8 processors that are operating at 3.1 gigahertz per. I forget the name of the case but it has some kind of filtration system on it for cooling. they will sell it to us for 850 dollars out the door. I think I'm leaning towards the custom computer given its ability to expand

Mine goes to "11".

I forgot to put this earlier but thanks to you guys who posted. I hate spending money on things i am not well versed in but like I said before I am way outta my comfort zonne with computers. Especially gaming ones. Thanks again and will prob throw out a few more questions before its all said and done :faint:

Bullshit. I'm running an old as Q6600 overclocked to 3.0 GHz with a 570 GTX GPU and I run every single game on max settings. BF3 runs at a consistent 60 fps. Now, if you're wanting to stream your games on twitch.tv at the same time, then yeah, you'll need something stronger (stream speed is dictated by CPU speed).

And Dave, Windows is fine. Yeah, people run servers on linux, because linux doesn't use up the resources that Windows does, but for gaming, Windows is the only option. You say you know a lot of gamers who run Windows emulators, well define "a lot", because I know a TON of hardcore PC gamers, and none of them use an emulator. I know a few who tried, but it was a pain in the ass for every game to run correctly.

Signed, a guy who has built well over 50 rigs for myself and for customers.

Dude...lol its a convict suit and handcuffs. Me thinks you need glasses before you build your next computer...haha

OK so an update on what we bought.
AMD FX 8 core processor Black edition
XFX Radeon HD 6790 Double Dissipation Graphics Card with dual fan and 3xcopper heat pipes
A Corsair H70 core hydro cpu cooler
1TB hard drive with 5 more TB expansion ports
8gb Ram
MSI Mititary grade something (If you cant tell I started losing interest from this point)
All inside a metal Corsair Case

I might be leaving out alot, not sure but let me know if we got a decent deal. We paid 850 out the door for the system.

Sure come on down to Tennessee and we can work something out bro.

I still have my old PC-62 Lian-Li brushed aluminum chassis that I originally purchased ~12 years ago. All smoothed edges and can be completely disassembled without a screwdriver.

that is a cool avatra
the judgement is elastic because this is a punk board
so show some strength with some attitude

I like AMDs, but they run hot. Keep that heatsink and fan clean. I'm not too familiar with the new models but the old ones wouldn't "throttle" down in a overheating scenario and would just "pop"

^^^ Yep
But you will have to run some serious frame rates for that to happen.
