Hereditary dark circles

I have had dark circles under my eyes since I was a teenager. Suggested causes for this that I have ruled out:

  • Drowsiness or lack of sleep (I get plenty of good sleep)
  • fat deposits castng shadows
  • prevalent veins causing bluish tint

There are prescription bleaching products available for pigmentation issues, and I believe that I may have too much melanin under my eyes causing sun induced darkening. The skin under my eyes is actually darker than surrounding skin. What I am wondering is if the skin under the eyes too sensative to use a hydroquinone solution? Any dermatologists in here?

You sure it's dark colored skin underneath it, and not just troughs and angle and contour of the skin underneath it casting a shadow? When you tilt your head up, does it go away?

I wouldn't use any chemicals underneath your eyes. Many people do not realize that chemicals applied under your eyes will be absorbed through the skin and onto the globe. This isn't true of all chemicals, but some of the more toxic ones are capable of doing this.

So if you apply something underneath your eye, there is a chance it could hit your globe and damage your eye.

What about some lightening makeup applied every morning? (I'm being serious here.)

Well, I guess cosmetics would work, but dayum. That would be an awful big step for a near 40 year old man to do :)

Just a thought, have you tried an allergy elimination diet? There could be a food you're sensitive to but it could be something really common in your diet (my allergy to wheat manifested at age 33). Food allergies can sometimes give almost the appearance of blackened eyes, so maybe a sensitivity might cause discoloration ...

But that being said, and assuming you simply have darker pigmentation under your eyes ... IMO, if it's something that really bugs you, either find makeup you can live with, wear glasses all that time that have lightly tinted lenses, or go see a good dermatologist/plastic surgeon. They can do all sorts of stuff with lasers these days.

Life's too short to not feel comfortable in your own skin.

Thanks for the advice, from all in this thread. Would that be the only symptom of a food allergy, tho? I don't see any other manifestations.

It is possible as food allergies can be quite mild to life threatening. In the case of darkened skin around the eyes, if it is a food allergy, then a likely cause would be wheat. You could try removing all wheat products from your diet, note the effects, and then gradually reintroduce them.

The alternative causes are heredtry, sun exposure, medications, fatigue, nutrition, and age. An increase in Vitamin K, which helps in blood clotting properties, may lessen the severity.

Facial creams containing Vitamin C, K, Alpha-hydroxy acid and Kinetin may also lessen the effects.

Simple task:

If you go to a makeup artist and put some makeup there to "lighten" it -- does it go away? Technically if that's what it is (and not shadows) -- it should.

"puppy dog" eyes run in our family. the girls and the guys have them. I can tell you from experience that liquid fondation wont work and neither do most pancake foundations. some cover six/powders will work but not for many hours before you need to reaply. there is probably something expensive out there that will work. hadnt thought of plastic surgery myself, but its an option.
