Help with insulin

I was going to take Humalin R since it is over the counter. My friend who has taken it said to work up from 2 to 10 IUs a day. He said I must remain awake for 6 hours after taking it. So he suggested training in the morning and taking it with my post work-out shake with dextrose. He than laid out my next 4 meals to be oatmeal and dextrose or some sugar and whey protein. How does this sound. Any advice would be appreciated.

Basically safe advise. Keep some simple carbs (Orange soda pop) on hand just in case you feel hypoglycemic.

During that 4-6 hrs after your shot, avoid all fats! Or else you will become the big fat bastard! Like powerbuilder said basically safe advice. Proper nutrition cancels out hypogycemia.

Speaking as an insulin-dependent diabetic, I can tell you that acute hypoglycemia will probably wake you up in case you do fall asleep. However, by the time it wakes you up you could very well be in pretty bad shape- confused as hell, sweaty, dizzy, and vision problems. Better not get to that point.

What we don't know is how much insulin your body needs to process x grams of carbohydrate. For me, it's fairly easy to determine this because I have a blood sugar meter. Ten units is what I would normally take for a meal consisting of around 40 grams of carbohydrate (not counting my basal rate delivered via insulin pump). Regular Humulin will take approximately forty-five minutes to one-hour to begin working after injection and then should have noticeable effects for 4-6 hours.

Humalog is better than Humulin-R in almost every way. It is an insulin analog and the only insulin I presently use. It is much more similar to your endogenous insulin- it begins to take effect in 15 minutes and lasts approximately 4 hours. But it is only available by prescription so you might have a hard time acquiring it.
