Not for any other reason than Pure Curiousity:

IS there "any" substitute for Benzyl Alcohol when making gear?

Does it HAVE to be Benzyl Alcahol????

there are compounds that could sub, but none are in wide use.

benzyl alcohol is a preservative, bactericidal and solubilizer.

its also cheap and widely available.
