Help on external firewire hard drive for laptop....

My laptop has the little 4 pin firewire connection so it cannot supply power to the external hard drive as I understand it.

Does someone know a surefire way to supply laptop battery power to the external hard drive when household current is not available?

I have 2 laptop batteries, I hear this is a huge batter killer. :)

I am thinking a 250GB external would hold some good stuff.

I've always plugged my externals into the wall outlet nearby. I don't know how long you need the power to last, but there's always the battery pack option such as APC or maybe even finding something really cheap from a company such as tigerdirect.com . . .

Of course, you could always bring in a big gas powered engine and plug the bitch into that.

there are some external cases out there that supply power through the firewire port, so no need for an external power source
They require the 6 pin firewire connection to get their power from the computer.

There is supposed to be a USB type power supply somewhere.....maybe.

My friggin laptop has a bad case of teh vanishing hard drive space. Every time I use it I delete programs and photos yet have less hard drive space available. It is to the point that it is useless for photography work.

I am going to fromat the damned hard driveand install the recovery discs that it came with before deleting everything I don't need. I'll bet the suckers still fills 12GB of space............somehow. It has never been on the internet, I don't know what fills it other than a Photoshop bug gone nuts that mysteriously saves everything.
